I always wondered why Gus didn't have more people who knew how to cook. Why was he banking everything on Gale (Before BB). Prior to meeting Walt and Jesse, something else could have happened to Gale as well, then what would Gus do?
Like the Cartel we saw in Breaking Bad had team of meth cooks.
Good cooks don't grow on trees and people like Gale have to be treated with good care lest they become sloppy, stressed or endangered. Cooks like Walter White are a rare breed and lethal to boot.
shareGus could have other prospects we didn't know about. Gale was just the furthest along, and probably the only one who knew about what Gus was looking to do.
The cooks for the cartel were inferior, even Jesse could go down there and make a better product.
The cooks in the cartel, all cooked up meth with a bad purity rate, don't forget that the reason why Walter White's meth in the show was so popular, is because he had a incredible high purity rate, a stunning 99,1. The other cook, a chemist as well had some samples from Gus from his cooks and told him the purity is poor (i think it was about in the 70's) and he could make allot purer meth. He is who you see in the scene with Gus in the "basement" aka the future superlab in tonights episode, The chemist, Gale Boetticher, WAS the cook before Walter took over. He was portrait by the same actor in Breaking Bad in season 3 and 4. It's basically not possible without being a chemist to make really pure meth.
shareHaving a good meth cook is great, but what if something happened to Gale? I'm sure a trained chemist who did multiple cooks with Gale, could learn how to do it his way. I mean even Jesse who hardly had any chemistry knowledge was able to cook Walt's formula through experience. Even Victor was able to grasp the basics of how to make Walt's formula just by observing. The Cartel, although were inferior, probably could have cooked Walt's formula by themselves if they just did a few more cooks with Jesse. It was strange that Gus didn't have a back up plan (at least it didn't seem so), if something happened to Gale. Especially with the amount of time and money he was investing into making the secret meth lab.
