Having female leads is far from a bad thing, but even now some people are still a bit too oversensitive about depictions/portrayals of race/sex/etc. It's also interesting to note that, indeed, Nick Wilde was going to be the lead, until the filmmakers realized the version of the story with him as the main character wasn't going to click, resonate with audiences as it made the setting too cold, bitter, dislikable.

Ironically, prior to seeing the film, I swore Nick was going to be the lead as it was.... Only for Judy Hopps to be the main focus, and for Nick, himself to not show up until about 25 minutes or so into the film.

While the Disney Co has gone awry in many respects over this past decade (essentially killing 2d films, and more recently cutting back on new stories and instead churning out sequels and retakes like there's nearly no tomorrow - not even a "great big beautiful" one at that...), this, Pixar's "Inside Out" and the numerous retro "Mickey Mouse" cartoons are there redeeming qualities for the time being...
