Why do they have to report about how they feel anyway?

i was watching the first half of the movie late last night. There a reason as to why everyone in the future has to make a resport on their feelings on how they feel etc?

That same crap goes on in Blade Runner 2 by the way

So they won't go nuts on a mission and cost money.

Two different situations. In Ad Astra they are apparently doing psych profiling to make certain their astronaut is fit for the work. Like it or not NASA was doing that sort of thing back in the '60s and it seems unlikely to go away for really high stakes, high stress work.
In BR 2049 the whole business is a bit more life and death as authorities are apparently concerned that the replicants should not get too... human.

well still, Ad Astra was basically copying the whole thing about telling the people that you work how, how youre doing with your feelings if youre stressed or calm.

Same exact thing.

Why did it matter anyway when the son was doing a better job than the people that tagged along to take Brad Pitt out inter outer space where they screwed up by going to that distress call that had the crazy monkeys?
