America's obsession with race is fascinating

Especially since many seem to perceive race as dichotomous, white or black. The US census has 63 different racial categories, if I remember correctly.

It's not just America, believe it or not America is one of the least racist large countries.

fact: 87.3% of IMDB users belong to the secret society of cynics.

That's *beep* American liberals see race in everything. That is why they are so fixated on it.

Its also, what the left does to African Americans. Convince them they're victims, everyone is out to get them, the white man is holding them down cause they're so 'racist' and that is why they struggle after decades of the same *beep* Dems spin this because its easy to manipulate their minds and then portray themselves as the saviors of the black community by pretending they're on their side and sprinkling some handouts to buy votes. The leftist media has perfected this. That is why you hear constant cries and portrayals of racism against a group who doesn't even make up 13% yet made up over half of the murder rate in the entire country in 2010. You hear nothing about the plethora of violence of blacks against whites but if one white cop happens to kill a black person, God help us, riots break out.

They don't bat an eye at Chicago or any of the other crime ridden cities where blacks kill off blacks at alarming rates. Somehow its only an issue if a white person is involved.

You know what group never cries racism? Asians. You know why? Because they are successful and make a better life here and stress the importance of education. They are the opposite of the black and Hispanic communities who are at the bottom and will always be at the bottom in every single category.

Do you work for Fox News?

Asians tend to be better off and better-educated when they come here, so the analogy is imprecise at best. Also, the Asians who immigrate here tend to be harder-working than the average people in their country. Immigrating to America from Asia is not that easy, and thus there is both a selectivity and a self-selectivity to the population that arrives. Indeed, you are failing to account for all manner of variables in the equation.

Chicago, black-on-black crime ... I see that you have your right-wing talking points in hand. If you don't see race in everything, then why do you characterize such crime as "black-on-black"? What about "white-on-white" crime? Rather than turning the matter into a racial one, why not see "black-on-black" crime as being driven by economics? Why not call it "poor-on-poor" crime? Frankly, the conservative obsession with "black-on-black" crime suggests that conservatives "see race" at least as much as liberals. Consider the "Birther" controversy: are you telling me that it was not about race and ethnicity?

The truth is that civil rights leaders such as Al Sharpton do talk about Chicago; the only times that I have seen conservatives talk about it have been to deflect from a controversial case that has left a young black man dead.

You're part of the problem, not the solution. How's that victimhood working out for you?

reply

Have they changed it? As late as 2010 there were six single race groups and 57 multiple race groups, thus 63 total race categories.

Still, the American obsession with "race" is apparent.

Yeah, right. So burning, looting, pillaging and destroying entire cities is your idea of fighting the system? Good luck with that!. Meanwhile, Asians(or Chinese as you so eloquently stated), actually work their asses off pursuing post secondary education, while working multiple jobs in order to make a decent living, instead of demanding handouts such as welfare, EBT, Section 8 and Obama phones. They value family(as do Latino and Irish immigrants) instead of fathering countless little bastard children because they can't keep their d*ck in their pants like most black males. The only reason why race is a "hot button" is because of this self entitled attitude the black community has with regards to the "system" and how race pimps like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson feed off of ignorant folks like yourself. Become educated, get a job, don't commit any crimes, raise your children properly, quite whining about something that happened 200 years ago and how the white man keeps putting down, and then maybe, just maybe, society will start treating you as equals.

I expected that much from a coward like yourself. The truth hurts, doesn't it?

reply

Yes, b/c whites have never ever done that stuff either. 

reply

That is true that you don't see Asian or Hispanics complaining nearly as much as you do Blacks, thanks to morons like Jesse Jackson, Sharpton, Oprah, Obama, the list keeps growing.

Americans are simply obsessed with those subjects that stay front and center in their media outlets. And coverage is political. It's all about control - the 2 parties know how to keep the little people preoccupied with infighting.

Jeez. It seems to me that Generation Y and Z only care about rights for homosexuals and homosexual marriages. While in the same breath they show contempt for anything that shows the race problems in America. Either this generation is more prone to bisexuality or more contempt for blacks complaining about racism.

The issue is not a generational one. Rather, I think that whenever the occasional film discusses race and racism, a bunch of conservative trolls or insecure individuals—apparently suffering from some sort of White Guilt that they are desperate to deflect—descend upon the movie's message board and run through some rant of right-wing talking points. If they do not see race, why not empathize and identify with the underdogs even if they are black? And if they are that 'offended,' why not just vote with their wallets by not purchasing tickets (as you noted in the other thread)?

Nowadays in America, you cannot make any kind of movie about a controversial social topic without the movie becoming a political football.

There is multiracial other, Hispanic (not black or white) Black not hispanic, White not hispanic, Asian and Native American.

Americas fascination with Race is because Race has always been a hot button because unlike the Chinese, Mexican and Irish immigrant, American blacks had the nerve to fight the system and rebel, as opposed to just keeping their head down and accepting their second class status.

Still happens to this day, some Whites won't accept Blacks as equals, and most Blacks won't accept anything less.

This guy nailed it, this is why, Native American got their casino, this is why latinos farmers got better wages, this is why Japanese got their got their reparation for WW2 by fighting the system, the civil right era, from learning from others, there is still work to be done they still have segregated proms and cemetery in the south.

"there is still work to be done they still have segregated proms and cemetery in the south."

It seems unbelievable this can still be going on in the 21st century.

To the OP: the U.S. (not to be confused with all of America and the Americas) has an "obsession," as you put it, with race because it's long been known as the "melting pot" country, with people coming here from all over the world. The English first, after of course Native Americans, Spanish, and later slaves who were forced to come here against their will, sold as cattle, and used for economic gain as cheap and often enough dispensable labor.

Similar in ways with Irish and Chinese peoples, except they came primarily of their own volition, rather than being enslaved and brought here against their will (an important distinction).

Anyway, about the film, I loved it. I think it was brave, honest, and the acting was great.

reply

The facination (sic) with race also probably has to do with the fact that 90% of interracial violent crime involves a black assailant and a white victim.
