Some questions (SPOILERS)

When did the mother become a werewolfette and how did it happen?
Was she married with a child at the time?
What was she doing on a Russian ship?
What did the Russians do to her?
Was the inference that she wasn't a werewolfette until the Russians infected her with the strain?
If the Russians infected her was Marie's father her real father? If he was - why did Marie become a werewolfette? If he wasn't - why did the villagers let a pregnant werewolfette live?
How did the villagers know where she had gone with Daniel?
Why did he help her - he obviously knew what she was becoming?
Was Daniel a werewolf too?
Why did the ending leave us hanging out to dry?

I felt no sympathy for Marie - I found the character unpleasant and obnoxious. She knew what was happening and she let it happen knowing she would kill people.

I'm happy to provide some responses to your questions, but bear in mind, like many fine films, this one leaves some questions deliberately unanswered, leaving conclusions open to individual interpretation.

1 The suggestion is that the Russians may have had something to do with it or that the genes may run in some families, perhaps only with the females.

2 I doubt it.

3 & 4 The ship appeared abandoned in port. The story gradually unfolds that the Russians came to town, hassled the mother (may have had something to do with an infection, but may not), who at some stage responded and killed them. Marie was drawn to the ship, because she appears to have had some dreams/visions (the movie title) allowing her to get an understanding of what went down between her mother and the Russians.

5 & 6 I don't think so. The inference is that some families just carry a werewolf genetic code, perhaps just with the females. The village people seemed to have some understanding and tolerance for this, as long as the werewolf didn't race around killing locals and made some attempt to self-medicate (the mother for instance).

6, 7 & 8 Yes, I think Marie's father is her father. This film seems to suggest that werewolves may only be female and require human male mates to reproduce. Daniel may well end up being Marie's human mate. He has shown her kindness and love and therefore she doesn't attack him on the boat. Daniel appears to be happy to hang with Marie, even though he realises like Marie's father, that she is a werewolf.

9 That's pretty much the ending. I liked it like that.

10 I thought exactly the opposite. I felt Marie's character was very sympathetic. Initially she doesn't realise what is happening to her, as she has been given little information by any one. So, no, she doesn't fully understand what is happening, because Mum (obviously), Dad, the doctor etc. haven't given her the full story (perhaps hoping she hadn't inherited the genetic strain). She has to steal the doctor's file and gradually piece together the mystery of what is occurring to her, which I think is a great strength of the film. I also disagree with you on your conclusion that she will kill people. I think the film strongly suggests that the female werewolves only take action against those that harass and threaten them (such as aggressive human males).

Hope the above helps.🐭

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to respond with such detail. It is always helpful to see things from another persons viewpoint.
