Another flop for Disney?

This isn't a troll question, but it's looking very strongly like it's going to flop or even bomb just like BFG did. Do you think it'll end up losing money? Or do you think it might just manage to make back its money, since it had a much smaller budget than BFG?

I think it's too early to tell but it's definitely not going to be a huge hit for Disney.

reply

The opening wasn't very strong, but it will overperform if it has good legs.

reply

Doesn't matter if it makes money at the theater.

Disney can milk anything to make a profit.

The film however was pretty bad. As bad as BFG.

reply

It won't be a huge success but flop isn't the only other option. It's got a comparatively lean budget so it won't take as great a performance to at least break even.

You Disneyheads make me laugh...

You go on the Suicide Squad thread and TONS of these type of "box office flop" threads are there.

The movie has a PRODUCTION BUDGET alone of $65 million...factor in Advertising budget (though I think Disney knew they had a stinker, so they didn't advertise much). And this movie has ONLY made a measly $26 million Worldwide...ouchy!!!

On the flipside of that Sausage Party has made $36 million worldwide, but had a MUCH CHEAPER Production Budget of only $19 million (with maybe a little more then PD on advertising budget since I constantly saw TV Spots)! Easier for Sony to see big profits on that one.

Face it, Pete's Dragon is a Disney FLOP by epic proportions!

It has a pretty small budget, so it will probably be okay.

reply

Wait until DVD sales, that's where they make the money.I saw the movie and enjoyed it greatly.

reply

If it has legs it won't be a flop but it's doubtful it will be a big hit for Disney. I don't think Disney were expecting a Jungle Book number but I think that they probably were expecting about 14 million more opening weekend, especially cosidering it has strong reviews going for it.

Hope more people see it thought it was a fine family movie myself , a lot better than some of the crap released in past few weeks

...and TOWERS over garbage like The Secret Life of Pets.

The original from 1977 could have been re-issued instead. Why remake this.

Why not remake this? No remake is exact (although, The Birdcage was played way too similarly to Les Cages aux Folles and fell short, in my opinion) and each director brings something new to the interpretation of an existing story. You might call all of those productions of Shakespeare "remakes". Just because a story has been translated into film once does not mean it's a done deal. Would you prefer that many of today's movies not have been made and the old black and white version or even the silent film versions be reissued instead? That's squashing creativity. I've noted a couple of remakes of Incredible Journey and both were good and interesting, about three versions of The Parent Trap and, again, they were all interesting. I favor some versions of Little Women over others, but still enjoy seeing them retold different ways. There's A Christmas Carol and The Miracle on 34th Street told and retold different ways. "Remaking" films, plays, and stories, is a time honored craft. I would call it "retelling" instead.

reply

This story definitely benefited from the remake. The original is dated, and also very classist.

reply

It was tracking between $33-$35 million the week before...it came in WAY below expectations.

It lacked the source material draw of other Disney live action-adaptations such as Cinderella, Maleficent, Oz: The Great and Powerful, The Jungle Book, and Alice in Wonderland. However, many box office critics did not worry about the opening figure given its modest budget. It didn't have any box office draws other than the stellar reviews and the notion of another Disney "live-action fairy tale."

Box office isn't likely to improve on a daily or weekly basis, and merchandise sales expectations are probably mild but that isn't my field. It's hard to imagine Disney being surprised or disappointed in the opening, though it did underperform projections by $5 million.

reply

Did you really have to bring up Maleficent and Alice? Both movies were jokes.

reply

Alice sequel had a similar opening weekend number and is at almost 300 mil ww right now. So it is possible. However, I doubt the overseas markets will do good cause petes dragon isn't nearly as well known there as it is/should have been in the US.
