75 % second-week drop with not even half its budget grossed yet. FLOP.

Say what you want, but this is even WORSE than Serenity, another TV show that in spite of tanking in the Nielsens, still managed to have a big-screen movie made, which also flopped with audiences. Fans keep saying that this Kickstarter thing was a success, but how can it be called that when the film itself flopped and won't even gross its budget back?

reply

Sorry, laddie, but this movie had made nearly six million before there was even a script.

reply

Warner Bros would have been happy if the movie made $1 million in their limited opening week and it made almost $2 million. Now it's gross is close to $3 mil. and that is without VOD numbers.
So no I don't think this movie was a FLOP.

reply

Ehum, this movie had close to no studio expenses so as far as the studio is concerned close to all of its box office take is profit... It's better to think of it like this that the movie had 6 million dollars in "pre-orders" and that's what they made the movie with so every single cent on top of that is in the plus column. Veronica Mars was profitable even before it was released.

reply

That's the correct way of looking at it. VM can never be compared to a blockbuster that has to rake in the bucks for a studio to stay afloat.

B/c they got the film made and it's good.

reply

The movie was completely funded by the fans. WB never spent a cent and you are considering it a flop? It has made 3.2 million dollars as no money was spent on it other than the fans.

Dude, this film is no flop. The studio can't lose on a film like this. The budget was low, it played in few theaters, went to Video on Demand day and date and the fans paid for half the film. This movie was pure profit for the studio

Damn. The dilm is already out of the top fifty, and it won't even gross 4 million on a budget of 6 million dollars. We all knew it would tank, but not this badly. Even Serenity came close to making back its budget. Goes to show that just because a property is big online, doesn't mean people will flock to see it. VM came, flopped, and audiences still didn't care.

I would consider it as a success because VM got a new fan...yup thats me :) I bought all the seasons and watched it before the movie and loved every minute of it lol.

It has not been a flop at all. What you have failed to understand is that it only played in a handful of theatres nothing like the near 4000 screens that a film like Captain America played in probably less than 10% of that number in fact. Seeing it on the big screen was a bonus that due to the wide spread of the fan base was only ever going to be seen by a percentage of the fans. The real earnings will be in the form of legal downloads, DVD/Blu-Ray sales and TV sales. It will easily recoup it's money this way and no doubt make a profit.
