Your Top 5 Teen movies from the 80's

1. It has always been a tie between Karate Kid and Breakfast Club for me
2. Revenge Of The Nerds
3. Footloose
4. Ferris Bueller
5. Pretty In Pink

Honorable mention: Porky's

reply

Ones I actually watched in the 80s:

1. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
2. The Goonies
3. Three O'clock High
4. A Christmas Story
5. The Muppets Take Manhattan

Honourable mention to E.T., which was also the first movie I saw in a theatre. I don't remember watching the movie. All I do remember is right at the end, I pretty much bawled my eyes out for a good half hour after the movie.

Hey...I was 7 years old. ๎„

Having said that, I figure I must have enjoyed it because a couple of months later, our family was out shopping in the big city, and we saw E.T. was playing at a nearby movie theatre. Without thinking, I said I wanted to see it again! ๎†

Unfortunately, the movie was sold out. Oh well.

Also, honourable mention to The Breakfast Club. I didn't discover it until later in life.

Loved Three O'Clock High. Underrated classic. I went to LA in the early 90s with my mother and sister. When we were driving down the highway, we saw Richard Tyson (the villain in the movie) next to us. He had sunglasses on. We looked over and he tilted the sunglasses down so we could see his eyes. Thought that was cool and amusing. Good times.

reply

Good to see other people who love Three O'clock High. I swear Quentin Tarantino had to have seen it and been influenced in some way, aside from all his other influences.

It was the era of the teen comedy...so many to choose from. There are a few borderline ones too...for instance, would "Back to School" be considered a teen comedy? It is and it isn't. I would also argue that The Karate Kid isn't a comedy...don't mean to rain on your parade or anything. Still an excellent movie.

1. The Breakfast Club
2. Risky Business
3. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
4. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
5. The Wild Life

I could name many honorable mentions, but that's my top five. If I had to pick one runner up, I'd go with Sixteen Candles.

The person did title the thread Top 5 Teen Movies. Unless of course it was originally titled Top 5 Teen comedies from the 80s. But it looks like it was edited well before anyone posted. So I have no clue. It could open up quite a few possibilities with more genres.

reply

Ah yes, you are correct. I think I filled in the "comedy" part on my own. I see "teen" and I automatically went there.

reply

I wasn't quite a teen yet in the 80s but here's my top 5.

1. Karate Kid
2. Weird Science
3. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
4. Revenge of the Nerds
5. Ferris Bueller

1. Stand By Me
2. Goonies
3. Breakfast Club
4. Sixteen Candles
5. Ferris Buellef

This is a tough one because you can pick quite a few. A lot of good ones to choose from. Let me try to be a bit diverse with my selections.

1. Back to the Future-Classic of course
2. Sixteen Candles-Yeah it's not PC (and why should comedies be PC anyway?!), but it is so damn funny. My fav Hughes film.
3. Nightmare on Elm Street-I remember seeing this in the theaters. It was a lot better when Freddy didn't speak as much. Much scarier that way. He wasn't a cartoon character.
4. Heathers-What a delicious dark comedy this was. Wonderful. Great lines. I think I quoted from this movie for yrs.
5. Better Off Dead-Ok. I mostly have comedies in here. But I think this has to be top 5. Another dark comedy. Wackier than Heathers. John Cusack hates this movie for some reason. It is hilarious. I still hear ppl quoting this.

Honorable Mention
War Games-Very entertaining movie. I actually think it's more realistic than ppl give it credit for.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High-The Phoebe Cates bikini scene is seared in my and every other teen boy's brains from that era.
Lucas-Realistic portrait of high school life for outsiders and the cool ppl. Football scenes weren't exactly top notch though. They were laughable for their errors. But this movie had heart.
River's Edge-Disturbing drama with great acting from Keanu Reeves. Yeah really.
The Sure Thing-Another great one from Cusack.
Mischief/Secret Admirer-Kelly Preston was so damn hot back then. Mischief is a weird terrible movie, but worth it for Preston.
Some Girls-Loved this film. I used to worship the ground that Jennifer Connelly walked on. She was so sexy in this movie. Any of the babes from this era can't hold a candle to late 80s/early 90s Connelly. This was a quirky film that should have done better at the box office.
Just One of the Guys-Funny film with a great reveal. The little brother was a riot.
Valley Girl-Nic Cage's best film of the decade. Really funny with great scenes and great music.
Weird Science-I liked this one better than Breakfast Club
Some Kind of Wonderful-Similar to Pretty in Pink, but I found this movie more appealing. I think this film was geared more toward guys, while Pink was geared toward girls.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off-Can't have a teen list without this.
Porky's/Last American Virgin-Both films are held in high esteem for guys growing up in the 80s. Virgin was the better film with a great soundtrack.
Say Anything-This was a golden decade for Cusack.
Revenge of the Nerds-Funny film. Probably overrated. Moon walk scene is a bit disturbing when you think about it though. Hindsight.
Risky Business-Breakthrough for Cruise. You never looked at the subway the same again.
Dead Poets Society-Seize the Day. This movie has a somber feel to it now since one of the leads and Robin W. killed themselves.
My Bodyguard-Overlooked drama from the early 80s. Had several touching moments in it. Great cast. Early film for Matt Dillon, Joan Cusack and Adam Baldwin. Everyone should check it out.

Speedy, you nailed it with Revenge of the Nerds. It's one of the bests.

One that no one seems to remember is called the Wild Life. It's casual..

reply

Had to look it up. And no I don't remember that one at all. Completely under the radar. Sounds like a flick I would have liked.

That's on my list!! The late, great Chris Penn seemed to be that film's Spicoli, at least I think that was the recognition factor the filmmakers were going after.

Everyone is good in it (Lea Thompson, Eric Stoltz, Randy Quaid), but I really related to the rebellious Jim, who was played by the kid from Weird Science. He was an 8th grade metal head who smoked, drank beer, wore an army jacket and was going after the cute blonde girl. That's pretty much what I was doing at the time too!

It also has some original score by Eddie Van Halen.

Here's my list...
1. Tie among the following. In alphabetical order:
Back to the Future (1985), Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), Die unendliche Geschichte (1984), and WarGames (1983)
2. Sixteen Candles (1984)
3. License to Drive (1988)
4. Teen Wolf (1985)
5. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

The rest are honorable mentions, in alphabetical order (and grouped where appropriate)...
Drew Barrymore: Babes in Toyland (1986), Far from Home (1989), and Firestarter (1984)
Phoebe Cates: Gremlins (1984), and Private School (1983)
Jenny Lewis: Troop Beverly Hills (1989), and The Wizard (1989)
Robyn Lively: The Karate Kid Part III (1989), and Teen Witch (1989)
Brooke Shields: The Blue Lagoon (1980), and Endless Love (1981)

The rest, either due to an actress (or actor), finding it fun to watch, whatever...
Big Shots (1987)
Cloak & Dagger (1984)
D.A.R.Y.L. (1985)
Flight of the Navigator (1986)
Flowers in the Attic (1987)
Heaven Help Us (1985)
How I Got Into College (1989)
The Karate Kid (1984)
Labyrinth (1986)
The Last American Virgin (1982)
The Last Starfighter (1984)
The Legend of Billie Jean (1985)
Mischief (1985)
Once Bitten (1985)
Pretty in Pink (1986)
Real Genius (1985)
Risky Business (1983)
Some Girls (1988)
SpaceCamp (1986)
Up the Academy (1980)
Valley Girl (1983)
Weird Science (1985)
Zapped! (1982)

That's just movies that can be considered for or about teens that weren't "made for TV" movies. If I were to include all movies that included teens or that could be fun for teens to watch, the list would be much bigger. Not to mention, to include made for TV movies, list would be bigger.

I've enjoy many movies.
