So how the hell did Private Spurling get away with assuming the identity of the deceased Captain Batting, was he part of a special regiment for the blind, hearing impaired and stupid ?

And what are the chances that his daughter Frida would chase him down and screw him ? Apparently because A: she was so impressed by the lovely letter he wrote to her mother about Private Spurling's death and B: she thought he was Captain Batting.

And why then was she killed by the Freemasons ? Is there some arcane rule about thou shalt not unwittingly screw thy father ? Or was it that as far as the beauty pageant business went it was a case of this tawdry show must go on and any trivial impediment to it must be totally eliminated at any cost ?

On the surface the writing seems clever but scratch below the surface and no it's not.
