Why was the second one so bad?

I really enjoyed the first, and thought this was just as good. But man, the second one is just awful!

I think partly because of the lack of Robin Williams and Hank Azaria's weird accent.

The second movie was cheesy but for me there were a couple funny parts. Their all good movies in my opinion.

His "weird" accent was an over-the-top Karloff...a subtle homage to the original Mummy. You didn't get that?

I've thought about it and I think there are a few reasons the second one wasn't that good--
1.) the second film was trying too hard. They were trying too hard to get the laughs, to recreate the magic, just generally reaching and falling short.
2.) Too many characters. The first and third films introduced some new ones but kept it down. The second film just had way too many characters who put in a token appearance and then disappeared. It's hard to care about characters you see for only a short time (new or old).
3.) They tried shoe-horning in a romance. The first and third films (well, aside from Rebel's 'romance' with Laa) did not go there.

faeria:

I just re-watched all three films together and you are spot on with your assessment. Hank was the best thing about the 2nd movie. Had a majority of the gags worked better then nothing else would have mattered but many were "cute" not laugh out loud funny. And with so many things going on you kind of forgot about the characters we loved in the first film. One night is not enough time to invest in a relationship so that fell flat as well. I'd go on but you did a much better job with your reply.

You are welcome. I am knew to posting on IMDB because I find so many posters to be mean spirited and/or not very bright. It is nice to read an intelligent post.

Also Azaria had a weird lisp, what was up with that?
