Historical Inaccuracies and Anachronisms

I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned on these boards already. Surely there are intelligent people out there who were irritated by this throughout the movie and can enlighten us by identifying more examples.

My own tentative suggestions:

Men didn't wear jeans in Ancient Judea.

Jewish women didn't wear pants and ride horses astride.

It is unlikely Judah Ben-Hur would exclaim "My God!" with such a casual air.

Jesus did not permanently reside in Jerusalem.

Lock and key mechanisms were not so sophisticated.

The concept of 'progressivism' did not come about until the European Enlightenment (19th Century).

Yes unfortunately the anachronisms were cringeworthy...
The white pants/jeans riding the horse - a short scene but noticeable nonetheless.
We are pretty sure we heard Judah Ben-Hur utter a "wow".
Anachronistic/contemporary sentence structure throughout.

We really wanted to like this but the anachronisms were quite jarring

Understand the challenge in doing a film that blends historical drama/action/spiritual themes - however, thought "Risen" (Joseph Fiennes) was a much better, more interesting and more carefully crafted film.

The period of enlightenment predominantly took place in the 18th, not 19th, century.

My favorite anachronism is the Battle of Ionian Sea. After the battle Ben Hur washes ashore in Judeea, having traveled half of the Mediterranean Sea. I think screenwriters never considered looking where Ionian Sea even is.

Yes, I found the facial hair on Romans very annoying - especially the Roman soldier that had only a mustache. Pilate was bad enough with a beard.
(And though I don't know if it was inaccurate - wearing fur embellishments in Jerusalem - sweat much?)

At times, Judah looked like he had just walked out of Old Navy.

I am not sure by 33 AD if full boots were worn by anyone - or were the troops still in sandals and sandal type booties?

Beards seem to have gone in and out of style in ancient Rome.Several of the later Emperors had beards.

I don't think beards became fashionable for Romans until Hadrian which was much after 33 AD.

This was not an historical documentary. It is a work of fiction, and as such, can have the people wearing and doing anything the writer chooses. If you want to criticize a movie, please base your criticisms on the movie and not your preconceived notions of what the movie should be.

You do forget that all these stories are nothing but Fairy Tales. Jerusalem at it's best gossiping like CNN.

You forget the foolish opening scene with Messala yelling 'Someone help' in the middle of nowhere. Maybe the sequel will have him send a 9-1-1 using smoke signals
