Cancer For the Upper Class

I felt this movie (can't speak for the novel) was too involved in portraying how a terminal illness affects those of an affluent upper class family and community. It seemed to do lip service to a specific socio-economic status and was rather ostentatious about it in some scenes. This seemed to overshadow the actual afflictions of the disease in the comfort, luxuries that are afforded by some. Seemed to be an exhibition of how the rich and famous cope with cancer, rather than a genuine representation of the emotions, fears, and struggles that more often than not engulf such a disease and affliction. I would like to have watched this with someone who is less economically endowed as the families represented in this movie and have their take on it. Curious if anyone else picked up on this and agree/disagrees?

I just saw it again and they were definitely fighting for money. When Hazel first says she wants to go to Amsterdam Mrs Lancaster says they can't afford the trip.
So it was very much an issue, although not the focus.

And so what if it's "upper class" as you calls it, which it isn't.
They are a typical Middle-class American family. Again, so what? That doesn't make cancer any less worthy?

Reported and ignored.

People tend to avoid embarassing themselves by actually fact-checking something before commenting on it. Heck, it happens in the first few replies of this very thread.

I wholeheartedly agree. What of the kids in the slums of America who's parents can't even afford to pay the hospital bills? Who's kids die because the funds just aren't there.

Let's see a film about that.

Dear Leisha,

Get over yourself. You are NOT a special snowflake. You are a ludicrously self-centered irrational human being who thinks EVERYTHING in this world should be from your point of view. There are plenty of movies about how poor people struggle in life. What's hilarious about you that prevents me from taking anything you say seriously is that it probably never once occurred to you that if he tells the story from the perspective YOU think it should be that we'd be leaving out a ton of other segments of society, but I guess that would be okay with you, because you are the only one that matters, right little snowflake?

I'm sorry if you are incapable of realizing that ANY story, movie, book can really only come from the perspective of a small segment and that it would be virtually impossible to be inclusive of everything. The book was written because Mr. Green wanted to tell a story about one unique perspective that really didn't focus on economics. Bringing financial struggles into it would have made this a completely different story altogether. Who's to say they weren't hurting financially and we didn't know because the parents wouldn't talk to Hazel about that. Just because it wasn't the focus, didn't mean it wasn't there, it just wasn't the story he wanted to tell.

Fine if you don't like it but for you to get bent out of shape because it didn't happen to be YOUR special little perspective is ridiculous. If you want a story about how a poor person deals with the financial pitfalls of cancer than YOU write one. Who do you think you are that you have the right to insist what someone else's story should be about? I bet you criticize anyone who has more money than you for being so selfish and self-centered while failing to realize you are exactly the same, but that's usually how it works.

Firstly, you are taking this waaaaaay too seriously, secondly, ever heard of polemics?

You act as if I have personally attacked YOU.

What gave you the impression/idea that the families in this movie were upper class? I don't see how or why it would matter anyways. The situation that the two lead characters were in, is very sad and unfortunate, regardless of who you are or how much money you have.

Respect what you have 🌌

They appeared middle class to me. But who cares? Cancer strikes everybody and this particular story focused on the characters the author chose to write about. If you feel the world is in need of a cancer movie that revolves mostly around lower class folks, perhaps that is your ticket to fame? Get busy writing!

I'm a real kewl kat.🐈
