Why did the husband give Brian a check for quarter million dollars and what did he do with the money?

I think Valerie thought Arielle was going to choose Brian over him, but he still loved her and Brian did not have the income to take care of her and the kids. So Valerie sort of 'bailed' Brian out and that's what he meant when he said 'see to her' when he gave Brian the check. But I don't think Brian cashed it.

I think the cheque might have been in the envelope with the ring. ie he gave it back. It wasn't overly clear though.

Of course he did not cash it in, but actually giving it back to her?!? How gauche that would be!

well, hes returning it to the family, and it was given to him to take care of her, not as a present for winning so, it's not quite the offense you're taking from it.

Because he's a 24 year old whose parents are holding onto his law-school tuition. Man-size love but boy-size pockets - which wouldn't matter except his love interest is a mother. So, their father is making sure that the means are there to take care of things as they go through some changes.

"Thinking" involves a lot more work than simply having a thought! Prove assertions with sources.

Because despite what happened he loves her and wanted her kept in the style to which she had become accustomed.
