Honestly I only picked this up blindly because it was cheap and the cover made it look like quick, low budget zombie cheese. Something I'm always in the mood for. Imagine my surprise when I was treated with a well written and acted, interesting character drama with a sci-fi/horror slant.

Haven't delved too far into British television outside of comedy, are there any other series like this out there? Doesn't have to be zombies or horror, but any smart show with a sci-fi setting would do fine (doesn't have to be British either).

I second everyone that has said Utopia, Orphan Black, Les Revenants, The Fades and Being Human (UK). I would add Sleepy Hollow and Continuum and also recommend the books Handling the Undead and Let the Right One In, both by Lindqvist.

exceptionally talented Vancouver BC canadian Higgins family 3 years ago privately created and released to youtube the six episode mini-mini-series "mind my brains, darling", described thusly:

Set in Britain in 1979, Mind My Brains, Darling! follows the ups and downs of family life with the Worthingtons, a typical family with a mum, dad, two kids and a grandfather. I'm surprised no one mentioned Dead Set. It's not character-driven like In The Flesh but it's a smart (and funny) zombie mini-series. It is more in the vein of 'old skool' zombie films - as in very bloody. It's British but I don't think it's BBC.
