They pick the wrong actor!

Ok, love me some JB I attend his concerts in the 70's when he was in his prime. He had style and great showmanship that was felt in the audience. His show's was a three hour marathon of music and dance at it's best, that keep you on your feet. It takes a great musician and ton of charisma to do that night after night as JB did for his audience.
I'm telling you this actor didn't hold me for two minute of a promo he is uninspiring. He was just reading lines there was no James Brown to be found in this performance. He will be the reason this movie will sink. Look at the movie "Ray" I love RC he was one of the greats. His music and talent was universally admired, but it was Jamie's performance that made that movie bio spectacular. This actor is good but not special he was flat in "42". I think he will be just okay in this as well.

The clips look amazing! I for one can't wait to see this!

reply

Im gonna see the movie regardless because i've been a James Brown fan since 1999, but from the commercials it looks like a corny comedy movie and a bit over the top.

I hope im wrong and actually like the movie, but we shall see on August 1st.

Don't accept your dog's admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful.

reply

Then who should have been cast?

reply

I could be wrong, but from watching the trailer it seems as if this guy can't OPEN HIS MOUTH to make audible dialogue. Its like something is stuck in his mouth and he is not speaking clearly. Why is he talking like that?

reply

Hi sierraship,

Have you ever heard the real James Brown speak? He was almost inaudible and Chadwick captured his speech perfectly - I posted on Nelsan Ellis's board that a Canadian journalist friend saw a screening and loved the film. He especially lauded Nelson Ellis but thought Chadwick was terrific too.

reply

Great reply D.D.!!! With Mr. Dynamite it was about the whole package...he was an original!!! He is the "trunk" and gave birth to all of the branches of which anyone in Soul, R&B, Blues (as an extension), Rock & Roll (can you say, Mick Jagger?), Pop, Rap, Hip-Hop, Gangsta Rap, owe part of, and a BIG part at that, of their direction and their courage to be BOLD! The world owes him a deep amount of gratitude for his originality which was loved the world over. He and ONLY he is and was the "Hardest Working Man in Show Business"!!!!!!

Anyone who don't know his affect on 80% of the music today just imagine what the heck music would be today with out him. If it wasn't for "The Godfather of Real Music" most would still be playing "Chop-Sticks" on their instruments.

reply

Everyone who has seen the film says it's terrific. James Brown was an original - I agree with everything you wrote and more. Michael Jackson borrowed his moves and got his sense of showmanship from Mr. Brown. Bruno Mars and Janelle Monae carry on his tradition today. I'm overjoyed that Mr. Dynamite will finally get some of the respect he deserves.

Go to YouTube to see the most amazing 54 seconds of entertainment ever. Type in James Brown and B.B.King Live. At about the 39 minute mark you will see James Brown call a young Michael Jackson ("I Wanna Rock With You", time frame) up on the stage. I won't spoil the rest. I saw James at 14...He killed it...I couldn't believe just how hard he worked for his sweat!!!

(Oh and how could I have forgotten FUNK, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Parliment -Funkadelic...and Rick James and his Punk Funk and MANY, MANY MORE FUNK-A-TERS!!)

I saw Michael twice...once in Dallas during "Thriller" concert tour and I took my wife to NYC for Michael's 30th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Garden. It was amazing..we had great seats...Justin and Britney on our left...Destiny's Child and Liz Taylor on our right and Eartha Kitt in the row in front of us...it was September 7th...we returned to Texas on September 9th and the last thing I said as we were in the taxi on our way to the airport was to my wife as I looked out the rear window at Manhattan at sundown..."Look at how beautiful it looks...from the golden sunset on the World Trade Center Buildings all the way uptown to Harlem.

Well, I guess we all know the rest, I'm so sad to say.

Hi barry-king,

Wonderful memories and we will never see their like again. Your story about the World Trade Center Buildings brought tears to my eyes. Thanks so much for sharing and I will go on YouTube!

reply

Wow loved your story, I grew up watching my VHS recordings of Micheal's 30th Anniversary performance at Madison Square Garden, I thought this actor was phenomenal and imo I think he did the Godfather justice.

Actually it's from the Thriller era. He's even wearing his Sergeant Pepper military style uniform that he always wore back then and during the 1984 Grammy Awards. Also, Prince comes on stage and performs as well.

When I was about 12 or 13 years old, I was babysitting two little boys. Their mother worked with my mother at the time. The wife was still getting ready when I arrived and the TV was on the MTV channel. A Prince video came on, and the husband called his wife into the living room and said, "Look at that! You KNOW he got his moves from James Brown!" I always enjoyed watching that couple's kids. 

Just saw it. It is phenomenal.

Disagree. Boseman was very good as Mr. Brown, but the overall story was not as compelling as Ray. The female characters were not as developed, but I enjoyed learning more about his life and Viola Davis was great as his mother. I was expecting more about his relationship with DeDe. Boseman had the look, moves and southern drawl down pat.

reply

Hi Gretchen1234,

I don't think anyone mentioned Ray. Both films were terrific and having one superior film about a musician's life doesn't mean there can't be another. This particular movie which was produced by Mick Jagger, involved with Brown's music and obsession with perfection which I found more compelling then his marriages.

What i dig most about JBs music... he was on the downbeat, the 1,3 instead of the 2,4.

reply

He was on the 1 on every 8 beats (2 bars).

reply

What barry_king said.

James Brown IS soul. PERIOD.

"You unlock this door with the key of imagination..."

I absolutely agree! I can't even imagine any other actor who could have carried that role the way Chadwick did! In my book, that was Oscar-level acting! I was THERE in that historic time and those live concerts in Atlanta were LEGENDARY! My then-husband loved Brown's music too, and sometimes it felt like we were the only non-Black peeps there, especially when he sang "Say it loud! I'm Black and I'm proud!", we felt as if every other person of color there were looking at us like, WTF are YOU doing here? It was OK though, we were dancing in our seats as hard as they were. The opening act would do their thing, and then when it was time for JB to come out, he teased and teased us as if he were willing to get us just frustrated enough to leave - then he would hit the stage and DELIVER the best shows I've ever seen! 2 hours, 3 hours - nobody even cared - we were all mesmerized and I cherish the memories :)

Darlin', don't ever take a Southern woman for granted!

I take it that not only have you never heard the real James Brown speak (both young and old JB), but also that you've never seen Chadwick in anything else. Chadwick as Jackie Robinson sounds nothing like Chadwick as James Brown is what I'm saying. Now, I wouldn't go so far as to say that JB was inaudible (well, younger JB that is), but he definitely had a thick accent.

reply

that the way James talked

reply

That's the way James Brown talked. Almost as if he didn't move his lower jaw. Many black comedians would make jokes (in good nature) about his speech pattern and "what did he say" comments. Chadwick Boseman nailed his speech patterns and mannerisms. Check some Youtube videos of JB being interviewed and you'll see what I'm saying.

reply

James Brown did speak like that but that is of no help if you're trying to understand what is being said. I had a real problem making out what he was saying for the most part.

reply

Wasn't crazy that he was deliberately speaking to and playing to the camera at times. I thought James personality was commanding and big enough, that it wasn't needed. To me, that is more a director's decision though. Other than that, I thought Chad nailed it on all cylinders.

reply

I had to put subtitles on the screen when the JB character was talking. Not for anyone else. It was less understandable than a heavy Scottish accent.

Well I think Chadwick did pretty good in this. I went to a free screening yesterday.

"Feel my aura."
"I don't think I'm allowed to."

i dont thinks, especially since you mentioned ray. a lot of people didn't agree with jamie foxx in the role, that he was too much of a comedian and not enough of an actor, and when people saw the movie there were times, at least for me, i thought he was Ray. People said Angela Bassett may not be right for the role of Tina Turner, again slayed the role, and wont even get started on the multitude of things people said about lil mama when she was cast in the tlc movie, and yet again slayed it. i dont know what james brown was like outside of performances, unlike today where if you sneeze or change your hair color it gets reported, i'm going to see the movie because i want to know the story, i want to know some of the mystique, the man behind the mic, a lot of celebrities today don't have any mystique, every thought they have, every move they make no matter how mundane or just plain boring is put in a broadcast. The movie does have a lot of hurdles against it. 1. Predominately African American movie, (it's a fact, not a lot are box office successes, don't try me, and the budgets never seem to go over the 30 million mark) 2. It's coming on the heels of Lucy. 3. It's going up against Guardians of the Galaxy. 4. The following week it's up against Teenage mutant ninja turtles (which I will have to see because my nephew is super hype about the turtles, ever since I showed him the older turtles, and he watches the tv show now.) 5. its a biopic. 6.it has to be a choice and adults and maybe some teens can't go to see a bunch of movies all in one weekend.

maybe it will be a "blind side" or "the help," or think like a man, got to the 100 million mark, but it needed time to build, because after all no one expected those aforementioned movies to do what they did either.

I just saw it and the theater was almost filled to capacity....mostly people over 30 and older, like me, who remember the great early days of James Brown. The movie was very good and Boseman was terrific. Don't know if it'll be a $100MM mark, but it'll be a hit.

reply

I saw the movie tonight. I felt like I was watching a copy of Eddie Murphy doing James Brown.
