Rita rant

Why does Rita have the privilege of always wearing her boots and her leather jacket in jail? She also wears a jean jacket. She acts like she is just visiting.

Prisoners on remand have the option of wearing either a prison uniform or their own clothes.

I had to google that. Very interesting, thanks. I never even heard of that before. That makes more sense. So, she hasn't officially been declared guilty, why would she be in there with murderers and such?

Thanks for your reply

Hey you're welcome :)

In Victoria, where Wentworth is set, prisoners who have been charged but haven't been convicted are usually sent to special remand centres to await trial. You're right, they would rarely be put in to general population of a prison facility, and if they are they are always separated from convicted prisoners.

It's just a bit of creative license on the part of the writers, they had to get the Rita character interacting with the rest of the cast while being there under cover. As realistic as Wentworth is, sometimes they have to bend the truth for the sake of the story.

In Victoria there is the Remand Centre which is for males and Dame Phyllis Frost centre for women. It tends to only be people who are considered too dangerous or a flight risk who are held on remand before their trials. As Bananaman mentions mixing the prisoners up like they do on the show is creative licence. They did the same thing on the original show this is based on "Prisoner" or "Cell Block H" depending on whether you are American or not.

I guess that makes sense.
