I'm glad people were moved by this film. I have tried to watch it several times and I find it pretentious and boring, relying on narration almost entirely to tell its story and containing minimal animation (I know that's his style, it works best when it's funny). I like Hertzfeldt's sense of humor and timing, but this film leaves me cold. Anyone else feel that way or am I alone?
My how you project. No one cares that you didn't like the film for reasons you are unable to articulate, offering instead a hackneyed phrase that has no relationship to this film.
It's supposed to. It's not a "happy go lucky" cartoon. It is a serious film that's style is literally 100% meant to be that. That's like hating Toy Story for not having the same childhood themes as The 400 Blows. And pretentious and boring? What a sad way to un-validate a film, especially one as good as this. If anything that is a pretentious way to carry your opinion across.
I watched it over the Thanksgiving holiday because my dad's name is Bill & he does not have cable
Since neither of us are overly 'familiar' with this artist's work, we found ourselves glancing at one another in puzzlement more than a few times haha! And wondering aloud which 'pharmaceutical' was likely responsible for the film lol.
But the fact that a lot of Bill's habits were just like my dad's, we laughed & we watched until the end.
But that said, I agree with others that it felt a bit 'overfed' with sentiments...it seemed excessive & the film overlong. 30 minutes or even 45 would have been plenty.
The music was also so loud at times that it DROWNED OUT the narration!
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus. Didn't he discover America? Penfold, shush.
