I actually enjoyed it

I really enjoyed watching this movie. Do you know why? Because I realized that I wasn't about to watch some hot summer flick made by a big Hollywood movie studio. I went ahead and got myself into the mindset that this was an independent film, most likely with below par acting and some cheesy, bad dialogue. This movie was never meant to be something amazing or the next Halloween or the next Thriller feature. I watched it for what it is. A film made by some horror fans having fun with the genre with some actors that are just starting out in the business. I went in knowing that this is low budget and more like a fan film sort of feel and prepared for that. Once I did this, I was able to enjoy it and not just the "so bad, it's good" deal where I made fun of it the whole time. I thought there were characters that were good, and then characters were bad. I thought that some parts were not up to par, but then the barn chase scene with Heather had me on the edge of my seat. I loved the drama with all the characters and I found myself yelling at the TV several times at the characters and actually got involved in the drama and the story, sure it had bad acting here and there, but it was fun and it was refreshing to see a good throwback to the 80s slashers amidst all of the lame overdone paranormal movies coming out lately. I've been craving a new slasher movie that just cuts to the chase with a guy in a mask slashing up some teenagers, because to me, all of the typical slasher cliches makes it fun to me. This film has its flaws, but for the budget that they had and the fact that they weren't working with high tech special effects artists and state of the art equipment and actors straight out of Hollywood, I thought they did a pretty damn good job and I would love to see some of the critics out there throw together an independent slasher flick and try to do much better than Varsity Blood.

I enjoyed it for what it is too -- a micro-budget Indie slasher, harkening back to the one of the early 80s. The only issue was the stilted line delivery of the actors, but quality actors cost money and the writer/director didn't have it. Nevertheless, if the viewer can acclimate to the woodenly-delivered verbiage this is an entertaining enough low-budget slasher.

The notable football movie “Varsity Blues” (1999) was shot in the same high school where this one was filmed, which happens to be the alma mater of the writer/director.

Speaking of which, the flick was partially shot in the town of Elgin, Texas, which used to be called Hogeye, the name of the town in the story (it was changed for obvious reasons).
