Too overstuffed, but nothing terrible

As far as animated sequels go, Rio 2 just falls into the OK category. It's not entirely awful, but it could've been so much better. I'll give it points for taking the original main characters to a different setting and at the very least it had some heart and emotion in certain scenes like when Jewel reunites with her long lost father Eduardo and when Jewel sings a lullaby to her three children. Not to mention that it has some of the gorgeous looking animation by Blue Sky Studios standards.

However, the story did had some cliches we've seen before in other movies and it's weirdly a mix between Avatar and Meet The Parents only with talking cartoony birds, the subplots kind of made the movie too overstuffed and while I don't fault the voice work, some of the side characters came across as either annoying or not that important. Even the movie can be too mean spirited at times especially when Blu gets treated like a punching bag.

Is Rio 2 a terrible movie? No, but it could've been so much better. At least it wasn't Ice Age: Collision Course which was pure hot garbage with some of worst humor and writing. Still not surprised that Disney shut down Blue Sky Studios a year ago and decided to milk that franchise with a boring awful spin-off movie and they're gonna make a third Rio movie probably without the main cast which would probably suck anyway.
