historical problem with the ardennes war plan

the drama presents it as the only or the primary invasion plan.

it wasn't. it was the fall-back to a modified version of the schleiffen plan of wwi, attacking thru the belgian countryside, not the forest, aiming mainly for the belgian coastline. (case yellow)

the (manstein) plan embarked upon must have been more than somewhat at the ready, however, because a week following the primary plans being discovered after a plane crash, the wehrmacht rolled thru the ardennes.

to make such a point of mercier being absolutely certain about this approach and no other, the writers are botching up history to make the hero the unsung prophet. it is usually no great virtue to be certain about things uncertain anyway. that's hollywood, that's our culture here in the states, apparently in the UK as well.

i hate it when they do that. the history is interesting enough, why make a stupid hash of it, just because you might have to be creative in forming a compelling drama around it.

that is my understanding anyway. perhaps an actual historian might correct me if i am misinformed in some part.

have to admit i am somewhat in awe of the german agility in switching their plan up in a week to an even more audacious, and completely successful, invasion of their neighboring great power.

those of us who understand a little bit, just a little, of the agony the french & brits had endured in wwi will be impressed all the more by the nazi state's ruthlessly effective aggression. the rest of the world was utterly sick of war. germany was ready to go. huge advantage.
