I like first 3/4 of the movie. Until the last part where she roasted the foster parents who tried to take care of her. Doesn't make sense. Is she a psychopath with super power? And what is with the high-pitched sound that only she and the foster mother can hear? So did the foster parents abused Mary? So many questions unanswered.
shareI think all the children burned also. Notice the fire surrounding Neve at the ending. I think it surrounded the other children as well.
shareI do struggle with that ending. While I applaud the filmmaker for avoiding the obvious and crowd-pleasing resolution (Neve overcomes her trauma with the help of her loving foster parents and everybody lives happily ever after), it was such a pessimistic and hopeless message that I'm not really sure what to make of it.
The foster parents (particularly the mother) were foolish to think they could help Neve heal from her trauma without professional help. But their intentions were good. I don't think they deserved to die, and I hope the filmmaker feels the same way. There's a way of reading the ending that suggests all parents are terrible and should be burned alive, which is not a useful thing to ruminate on.
