I mean the sisters. Not one looker among them. Still i enjoyed the 1st eppy. Made me laugh a few times.

Nah, I think they did choose deliberately 'modest' looking girls because the show's about Martin.

I think you're right in that they deliberately made them look worse (especially the youngest daughter), but I don't think the people they cast are ugly at all. Part of it could be wardrobe and makeup, part of it could be the camera angles:

I wouldnt say that - i mean sure the youngest with the tache didnt look good but they removed it for series 2 but i think Trisha is quite pretty and Fidelma certainly is. But yes i have to agree the Mum is very tasty.
