is this film actually a 4/10 or is it receieving hate for other reasons?

what is actually so horrible about this film? it looks fairly decent. im afraid that people who havent even seen the movie and are lindsay lohan haters are giving this movie 1/10 stars.

reply

You're probably right, there are likely a lot of Lohan haters out there who only want to rate it low because of her presence.

That said, the movie's pretty damn awful: badly written, badly directed, mediocre acting at best. One reviewer said that Schrader had a chance to do something unusual & just did a standard Schrader-type thing.

Also, the production was very troubled: budget problems & Lohan's infamous penchant for showing up late, getting upset, trying to dictate terms on who was cast in the male lead, etc.

I like Lohan. She was the only reason to watch this terrible film.

Agree with you. Mostly, I didn't like the tech gadgets substituting for a live person in the scene, an amatuerish mistake of beginners. Deen was underrated and Lohan was fine, they just didn't have good material to act in.

reply

I agree with the previous poster. It was pretty terrible. I am indifferent towards those involved in it so that had no effect on me. I feel like there is an intriguing message/idea in the movie somewhere but they just couldn't figure out how to express it. I gave it a 4 and I think that was somewhat generous.

The soundtrack definitely is 1/10. Wish it wasn't there at all.

reply

There barely is a soundtrack to begin with. Three tracks is merely nothing. But I feel the film is mainly hated for it's content. The film is about character relations. People expected to see a story.

I'm a Paul Schrader and Bret Easton Ellis fan (and this is Ellis material through and through), but I wouldn't give this higher than a 6. It's very firmly in "decent but not great" territory.

Lindsay Lohan is still a very good actress, but she's starting to look like a Krusty the Clown sock puppet. I'm not familiar with James Deen's "work", so to speak, and he wasn't great in this, but I would be very interested in seeing him in some more mainstream theatrical features.

reply

if youre a guy watch james deen's "work" and take notes
and youre a girl just watch it up and enjoy
seriously hes the best male porn star working today

reply

It's one of those you either like it or not...I like Lindsay Lohan so I was drawn in by her character, which she did a pretty good job - acting wise. A lot of the actors were so/so. If it wasn't starring Lindsay, I would've passed. The script could have been better IMO..I would have preferred it be more of a noir/Alfred Hitchcock type film...other than that it was fine, I enjoyed it.

reply

It was an OK movie but Lindsay Lohan brings a lot of baggage into movies. It's a real shame she doesn't really care about what she does in her personal life, because her film career could have been stellar and she could have been A-list since she is so very good.

So true.

@Girlongoing................... I'll take notes on James Deen's work if I ever decide to be in a movie that involves me banging a coked up girl with daddy issues, but definitely not if I'm looking for acting tips.
Unfortunately, this is not a porn, it's supposed to be a real movie. It's pretty bad all around, but his acting is some of the worst I've ever seen.
The story was nothing exciting, the mood was stale, with very little in the way of soundtrack to distract you from all that, and leaves you really not caring what's going on.
The writing was atrocious, and the lines delivered poorly.

It takes good acting to pull of Brett Easton Ellis dialogue, because it comes off corny, stilted, and lacking any believeability with people like this.

I thought it was terrible. It takes almost the entire movie for something to happen, and when it does, it goes nowhere. The dialogue is dull and repetitive; the characters are almost caricatures; and the entire movie could be summarized in one sentence, which is not a good thing. Lohan looks bloated and unrested. While her acting is not bad, considering that the lines are uninspired, she's clearly headed towards looking 10-15 years older than her actual age.

It's several reasons:

1. Since leaving the early 90's many people have turned away from Bret Easton Ellis believing him and anything connected to him as shallow

2. Lindsey Lohan has had bad press and its become hip to be dismissive of her

3. Pretty much anytime there's male nudity in a movie you can count on homophobic men to put it down

4. It's set in LA California which brings its own set of haters

5. For some reason a lot of people don't like to watch pretty people with money do things they'd let less fortunate people get away with.

This movie isn't great by any stretch but I've seen 1,000s of movies and am a huge Star Wars fan and this movie was better than Episode 1 & 2 of that series but has a much higher score than this movie.

it's not remotely great but it is better than such a low score

No, it's more like bad movies like the prequels are scored far higher than they should be. People think a 7 is a low score for some stupid reason and it's not. On a scale of 1 to 10, 5 is 'Average'. This movie is well below 'Average'. It's an awful movie. The acting is awful, the writing is awful, the direction was awful, the plot was awful. Realistically, a 4 is being too kind. Episodes 1 and 2 should be 4's or 5's, but for some reason, this generation thinks everything is either a 1 or a 10 and it screws up the scores, making them meaningless.

reply

completely agree with you on how the majority of imdb users have taken to scoring.

reply

No, it's bad. I'd give this movie a 4 tops. Lohan was the only one in the movie that can act at all and that's not saying much. Lousy script, lousy actors and lousy movie.

reply

I have to agree. I watched this movie and found it completely boring. The plot, and the acting were just terrible. Lindsay and the chick who played the assistant were the only ones who made watching this bearable. James should just stick to porn.

You jump, I jump remember? I can't turn away without knowing you'll be alright
