surprisingly good and entertaining

Just watched it and must say 10/10 for indie movie. Actually best damn indie movie I've ever seen and high fantasy themed to top it all off.
(more WoW than LotR influenced imho)

Story is generic but hits all the right buttons for fantasy rpg fans.
Costumes and masks are excellent, scenery pretty good.
Action scenes were also good (could've used more dynamic camera work there tho)
Directing and photography quite decent, camera work is bit amateurish at the moments but hey...
Music is absolutely awesome, professional grade work.
But acting lefts a lot to be wished for. Two leading pretty faces aren't delivering at all. Paladin dude is expressionless and stiff but semi decent most of the time. She-elf on the other hand is down right worst amateur hour all over the place (she is gorgeous tho as is that oracle chick so at least eye candy is there). Orks were awesome especially main character one, dwarfs too.

All in all it's a good movie, very good actually and if you like sword and sorcery even a little bit you'll enjoy this one.

Agreed with everything apart from 2 points which I will slightly disagree on.

1. Acting really wasn't that bad on the part of the two leads at all IMO. I think they did a very good job and would like to see them reprise the roles personally.
2. The score, though I agree about the quality for me the volume of the music in a couple of scenes made it difficult to heard the script, particularily when the orcs were talking, in one scene I really coulden't make out what was said, even with a couple of re-winds (though I got the jist).

My only negative points would be the costume of the big thing that attacks them in the woods, IMO that was the worst thing in the film and actually kind of dragged the whole scene down which is a shame, I appareciate without massive budgets realistic looking costumes are not particularily easy but I would have left it out personally, the rest of them, and the orcs were really good.
The other point would be (actually a point for a LOT of movies) how easily people who have been wounded seem to ignore those wounds.... laughing heartily after just being sliced accross the stomach... not likely, even for a fast healing orc... but, as I say that can be said of a lot of films of all budgets.

Overall a very solid film, and way better than either of the D&D movies lol. EDIT: wow they made a third one.... well I can't speak for the 2012 one.

I'm not really sure what a zombie Minotaur would look like, but it was close enough for me.

I was also pleasantly surprised by this film and really enjoyed it. Nemyt, the Elf Bounty Hunter, reminds me of my own Elf character in one of my tabletop RPG's that I play named Saoirse. This portrayal helps me better visualize my own character, actually.

reply

Agreed, much better then expected.

reply

It was excellent, script, costumes, even the prop's and sound effects.

But like Maxxev, I had issues with the music.

I worked out as 6.8 stars with a 1 bonus for budget.

I must say i watched recently some of the previous movies from the same producers/cast and they are definitely improving with each movie.I dare to say in a few years,if they keep this up,will be making movies comparable with the blockbuster ones but with only a fraction of the budget.
Maybe they could eventually get the rights from some videogames and make some decent adaptations instead of those Uwe Boll crap.

Just watched this on SyFy in the UK, expecting it to be some nonsense to have on in the background.

The movie was surprisingly well done and drew me in, hadn't actually watched SyFy in years with their reliance on really bad B movie schlock such a sharknado.

Hopefully SyFy will get some more of the films by the people who made this and start going for quality over ridiculousness but I highly doubt it.

reply

Yes, totally agree: SyFy should look for movies like this one and support/buy them! And Arrowstorm and Mainstay Productions are really getting better and better. Check out their coming new movie Survivor, again with Danielle Chuchran and directed by John Lyde (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0t2xJS-Z7o).

why isnt it on DVD in the US yet. I mean it was filmed here but the dvd is only in Europe

Looks good. It's too bad that the orcs are a complete ripoff of the Lord of the Rings. They obviously had money for makeup and costumes. They should have found a way to make them look unique.

reply

I thought the main Orc character looked like a cross between an Orc and a panther. I found that unique.

I also was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the movie. The fight scenes were done well. The main elf character was quite agile.

reply

I agree that for a movie I never heard of and obviously low-budget indie I thought the costumes, acting, and fight scenes are pretty good. I haven't finished watching it yet, but so far it doesn't look bad. My only problem is that it's a little TOO much like the LOTR.

It was amateurish, but rather entertaining. Really not bad considering it's Kickstarter movie (from what I've heard).

still it was better then all those "official" DnD movies. Remember that big budget DnD movie and how terrible it was, not just as DnD movie, but as fantasy movie too ?

reply

You got it spot on. I saw this on Netflix then checked the rating here. I almost didn't watch it because of the low rating but I love fantasy like this and just gave it a chance. Like you, I thought the lead female wasn't quite right but indeed very attractive. That in my opinion was her saving grace. Didn't like the paladin at first but he grew on me. While the orcs looked decent I felt they needed just a few finishing touches. Same with the dwarf; he really needed a more fleshy color. Think a little make-up could have fixed that. I watched this until completion...something I won't do if I don't like it. For their effort, budget, etc I give this movie a...erm....6. But, it's a good 6...hehe. Congrats to those involved.

reply

yes, it's like a continuation of lotr. well made.
