I just cannot believe a director directing a giant, magnificent MASTERPIECE like The Skin I Live In and then directing this utter, dreadful, pathetic piece of crap. Wow. Just wow. From the highest highs to the lowest lows. One of the worst shjts of 2013. Beware!
I thought it was OK, but not hilarious. The highlight for me was the song which was absolutely hysterical and I tittered sporadically throughout the rest of the film. I did wonder if some of the political jokes went over my head with me not being Spanish. On the whole, I was a bit disappointed.
I don't think the film is dreadful but it is disappointing by Almodovar's standards. I think the biggest fault with the film is that it simply isn't funny. For a comedy, that is quite a big flaw. The satire of the Spanish economy is probably more resonant to native Spaniards (the white elephant Airports, bank corruption etc) but this still isn't fully rounded in the plot.
This being said, I enjoyed the subplot in Madrid with Ricardo's lovers and the whole film looks sumptuous in the way only Almodovar films can be. Worth a look but certainly not up there with his best.
It is a set back for Almodovar but not utter, dreadful, pathetic piece of crap. It is just good. Reflects the political and financial situation these days in Spain. It is a call to accept who and what you are, emotionally, sexually and where to find love and security. It is a surreal comedy. Just liked it. Not like other master pieces bad education, Live flesh, Talk to her....etc.
The film opens next week in NYC. Going to see it because I'm a huge Pedro fan. This film is getting horrible reviews. One critic said this was his worst film.
Even if you're going to do an inconsequential comedy, at least make it seem like you're trying.
This is a sub-par effort no matter who the director is because it isn't very funny.
I thought the lone musical number was weak and on the level of your average SNL sketch.
I wish he had gone way over-the-top sooner with the idea of people revealing what's behind the social mask in terms of their own perversions and personal transgressions.
This is the first PA movie that I've ever scored under a 7 that I can remember, and usually he's up in the 8, 9 and 10's for me.
I agree with the OP. I'm not easily offended but the gay jokes in there are just dumb. This movie perpetuates the stereotype "gay men are promiscuous" and to top that off, a cheating, confused husband has a forgiving wife, and a drugged newly wed girl forced sex on her husband... So everybody is happy....? Yay? Oh and then a middle-Eastern-looking guy is drugged and raped. Nobody thought that is problematic? Try having a white man raping a middle-Eastern girl who's drugged.
All that aside, this just wasn't an interesting movie. I took a potty break and got coffee in the middle of it and I didn't miss ANYTHING.
If you want to see a similar but WAY better movie....I don't know, but I keep thinking about Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - it's funny, but also tells a great story of gay men and people who have life problems. I watched it many times and never wanted to miss any part of it.

I never thought about that , but you are absolutely right !! Good point
