Gun control

So, in January the "star" of this film stated in an interview that the U.S. was gun crazy and nobody should own a weapon. Then, yet another "hit movie" is released with the central theme of guns and their use both as defense and assault upon another.
So, sorry, your credibility is very lacking.

Spoiler alert.

The violent nature of guns never seems gratuitous in this film.
Unlike say the "Taken" Movies.
Although Reckless driving is.

At least two gunshots in this film will appear in unlikely times.Without any real indication that they will happen.
Another happens and end's in a mercy killing...of sorts.
In contrast to a knife murder and strangulation which show no remorse.

Even the climax makes every bullet count.

I'm probably going to get flack for this, but I think Liam Neesons' statement holds true despite him being in movies such as this where guns are prominently featured.

First of all, nowhere in his statement did he say that Americans were gun crazy or that no one should own a gun- he said there were too many guns, not just in the states but in the world in general. To be fair though he did direct most of his comments towards the USA, but then again it does have amazingly high levels of gun owenership and violence.

Personally I agree with his comments about gun ownership. Regardless of this, I find it amazing that people on here are criticizing him for his supposed hypocrisy: he is acting in a film for crying out loud! It is his job and perhaps he likes making this kind of movie, but that doesn't mean that he has to agree with gun use! I am pretty sure most actors don't sympathise with every character they play or agree with their characters use or lack thereof of guns or any other kind of weapon, nor do they have to in order to play the part well. He is entitled to his opinion and to make the films he wants. He would be hypocritical if he had a gun collection and weapons permit, but to make a piece of entertainment that utilises weapons for the sake of the story? I don't think so.

Furthermore, people should be able to watch a film without thinking "Oh, he looks cool with a gun- I should get one!" As Liam Neeson himself said "A character... going out with guns and taking revenge: it’s fantasy. It’s in the movies, you know? I think it can give people a great release from stresses in life and all the rest of it, you know what I mean? It doesn’t mean [the viewers] are all going to go out and go, ‘Yeah, let’s get a gun!" Exactly.
People who are mature enough to watch this film should be mature enough to make their own decisions without having a film influence their actions. You can't censor the entertainment industry because of what a minority of people might do after seeing a film or TV show.

In short, I don't believe his credibility is lacking- quite the opposite in fact.

So, Tim Burton, Tarantino, and Divid Fincher thinks murdering people is okay? Or if they speak out against killing people, they lose their credits?

reply

Yeah. Sort of like how an actor might be against the ownership and use of tanks, bombs, and machine guns by ordinary citizens, and yet star in a film in which he's a soldier.

See how that works?

reply

I'd rather see gun use in a movie than on the news.

i am 45 before moving to UK 29 years ago all my friends used to carry a gun or a knive on the other hand i only used my hand or sharp tongue. i have never badly hurt any one and had a punch up almost twice week at one stage, i was never jailed and most important i am alive, i can not say the same about my friends some 6 feet under some rotted in jail most had no proper family or kids, any one who says anything about statics and gun control just makes me laugh if there is a gun control goes out of window, i was always a coward in the way of carrying weapons did not have the balls and did not trust myself i know from beginning i could not be trusted with gun with my temper, i will personally remove any guns from anywhere.

"your credibility is very lacking"

He obviously knows the difference between fiction and reality, do you?

the central theme of the movie is to not kill people with guns if you want to live happily ever after like his son. liam kept telling his son all through the movie dont do it. dont shoot him because I want you to lead a better life. liam is the bad guy who realised his mistakes in killing people with guns and didnt want his son to follow the path. liam was bad guy turned good aka vegeta.

Exactly. This movie shows violence and is an entertaining violent movie, but they aren't glorifying the use of guns. This movie could've been a western with rifles, a Middle aged movie using daggers and swords, or a Samurai movie with Katanas. The weapons weren't the focus, though they were used a lot.

This is a movie about killers and criminals that kill people. It's about how the older guys regretted the people they had to kill and still regret the world they chose. They also got shot. Movies that glorify guns never have any main characters die horribly and in pain from being shot. They don't show the grief of those that have lost loved ones to the gun violence or showing the regret of killing and having to kill.

As far as Liam Neeson goes, the interviewers ask the questions and the "stars" are allowed to say how they really feel about the issues brought up. Liam has always had a sense of humor about these action movies and he does them because he finds them fun. He doesn't take them seriously. He's never been known to be into guns and shooting people in REAL LIFE, so as long as he's a person that's law abiding and doesn't have a fetish for guns, Liam has full credibility in representing himself as he is in REAL LIFE.

Javier Bardem is famous for playing crazed killers, but he's a pacifist that hates guns. He, like Liam is an ACTOR. They select their roles because they like the story, the script, the fun, the directors, and many other reasons. They don't take the roles solely for the guns or gunplay.

One aspect to fetishize is to put power into an object. In the US over 90% of gun homicide he decries is associated with people who are already criminals, mostly felons, the rest people with at least five arrests.

And Neeson claim that US gun murder is "skyrocketing" does show he has a weird fetish, he is inverting the core metric, US gun murder has in fact plumaged (down over 60% now form 1992 levels) as gun laws were relaxed
