Would this movie still work and also be as acclaimed AND talked about if...

... the "lie" (or rather - 'confabulation' of a child under several circumstances and the automatic willingness to believe as such from adults and their poor handling of the matter) or even accusation of the main character was of something other than *intimate abuse* and child molesting?

Like, maybe say he was accused of being an alien of some sort from another galaxy or a ghost? Or maybe tied to a controversial political notorious party including even Nazism from the past or anything else really?

Would the movie still have worked, be compelling, have issues worth looking at and basically satisfy and impress critics and audiences alike? But also, given the sensitive nature of that subject in general, be less controversial and anger generating (DESPITE its acclaim) in other areas?

Also, before seeing this film. From reading the synopsis. Did anyone expect that the so-called "innocent lie" mentioned about on the front and back covers, would be for something ELSE other than him being a child molester? Or did you suspect it could be the case?
