For the life of me, I can't understand why it was trashed. It was a good film.
I haven't seen it, i might some day, on DVD. I like Nicole (her Cannes interview was interesting, I could see that she was pulling away and understanding this is not a "biopic") and would love to see the scenery! But i will add what Grace's family said, it was/is posted on the FaceBook page of Albert & Monaco, which is a cool page, I encourage people to check it out (search "Prince's Palace of Monaco") Her family was
polite, they didn't ban it, just said based on the script and trailers, that it is not based on historical data nor any information from good books or interviews.
I posted there that my own Mom said "Since the director said it is not a biography, why not make up new names and not call it Grace of Monaco?". That makes sense to me :)
This is the post from the family, in French, I can translate fairly well to English at the bottom if you wish.
Film “Grace de Monaco”

Communiqué de presse
2 Mai 2014
www.palais.mcEnglish - my best effort (and quick)
On the occasion of the film "Grace of Monaco" opening at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14, 2014 and its next outing (appearing) on the screens, the Princely Palace reiterates that this feature can not be described as a biopic.
The trailer confirms the totally fictional character of this film. This reinforces the conviction left upon reading the script that it is a production, a page in the history of the Principality, based on historical and literary references that contain wrong information/data. The director and the producers had refused to take into consideration the many comments from the Palace that would have resulted in a questioning of the overall storyline and characters.
The princely family does not wish in any way be associated with this film that does not reflect reality and regrets that her history has been a diversion for purely commercial purposes. So there is that. But i think since most people don't know a lot about Grace and Rainier, I have no idea why they didn't like the film. I know that Weinstein wanted to make many edits and battled the Director about it - he seems a bit cranky :)
