I haven't seen The Thing Called Love but apparently it's a comedy-drama which Song to Song definitely isn't.
This movie isn't for everyone since it's quite different from your standard narrative movie. Along with Malick's previous films made after The New World, this one has the same stream-of-consciousness style. There is a rough plot but like those previous movies Song to Song consists of "scenes" that are snatches of an event or brief moments (like a series of narrative ellipses) overlaid with contemplative voiceovers.
