I'm not a fan of the "found footage" genre, but watching the part with the plane encountering turbulence freaked me out quite a bit. I'm a terrible flier, so that probably enhanced my thoughts of the movie. It at least kept me intrigued enough to sit through the rest of an otherwise average (at best) flick.
Oh, by the way, there's no need to apologize for liking the movie. Who cares if others don't like the same movies as you? :-)
I thought Grave Encounters was crap. It's hyped to be something it's not. There is far FAR better handheld horror movies out there than GE. Far better.
"Thor, Hlôdyn's son, protector of mankind. Ride to meet your fate, Ragnarök awaits.
^^^^ The first 3 Paranormal Activity films (I'll count them as 1) Home Movie, The Den, Afflicted, V/H/S (1 + 2), Rec (1 + 2), Troll Hunter, PA: The Marked Ones, The Blair Witch Project, Alien Abduction: The Mcpherson's Tape and Evidence. There's 11 found footage films that I personally think are better than Grave Encounters. I know you weren't talking to me but I had to say..
I was extremely disappointed by Grave Encounters. I felt it didn't build the tension or the scares of a lot of the other found footage films, and that it was too long.
However, I was impressed by Evidence. The final half hour might be crazy and not answer a lot of the questions it poses, but talk about a turn-around. The film went crazy, and I felt it worked.
Lake Mungo (more a fake doco than a found footage film) is my favorite in this genre/sub-genre.
"It's better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it"
I enjoyed GE 1. Haven't seen the second one yet. Another found footage I enjoyed was Quarentine.
These ghost hunter found footage movies can be really tough, I've seen some of those and find them to be quite dull while watching the corners of the screen hoping something appears. GE at least moved along at a modest pace.
David Traversa. Jas j w: I agree with you, I saw it yesterday and found it quite interesting, save for the hand held camera ALL THE TIME, that WAS tiresome and fatiguing!
I liked it too. I am a "found footage" fan for the most part. Despite inaccuracies and the low budget, the plane scenes were very well done, I liked the characters, rooted for them, and was glad it was not another zombie film. I am getting a bit burned out on that and vampires lately. This was sort of Jurassic Park meets Cloverfield.
After that, it feel into the hole of Low Budget, B-Movie crapyness. I wasn't all tore up about the condition of the back part of the plane, because i realize that was because of budget. And i didn't have a problem with the guy who went out after his wife, cause i would of done the same thing. What i did have issue with was people just leaving the safety of the wreckage site. That was there best place to make a stand. They could of put together makeshift weapons from the debris. They could have created some sorta of stand inside the plane, and placed other luggage/debris at the large hole. They had no clue if there would of been any structures / buildings off into the woods.
They find other shelter, and instead keep creating reasons to leave said shelter in the middle of the night. How about waiting till morning when you can actually see. The sister wastes about a minute, just sitting in the car and not driving anywhere??? Charli? The Air Marshall just pops up out of nowhere right in front of the truck?
It's a pet peeve of mine, Rob, but it's "would have" and "could have" not "would of" and "could of". You call yourself a type of genius, so you should know this.
Do you not remember the flight attendant Lois was attacked and killed in the half-fuselage of the plane? So I'd hardly call that "safety" and fully understand why they would seek shelter somewhere else.
agreed. i don't get why everyones hating on it or the 3.5 rating... i mean this movie was what you expected. were some of the characters annoying? sure. but that was to be expected in a movie like this. when in situations like this people are going to panic and you aren't going to like very many people usually.
in the end i thought this movie was solid and won't ever understand the hate it got. best 3.5 movie ive seen. thats for sure lol
I agree. I didn't think much of the movie when it started but I actually did enjoy it. Found footage movies can't show you too much too early or they'll lose you. I was thrown by the ending but all in all, a descent watch.
