Love her as an actress... Extremely versatile, but she wasn't believable in the role of the rocking-out mother... I had trouble with this... Age? Maybe.... It just didn't feel right with me. Other than that, great movie..
shareI couldn't buy her as a rocker. Not even a little bit. She handled everything else beautifully: her character's severe personality disorder; the real love she did have for Maisie despite her own massive dysfunctions; and finally, what had to be hardest of all, showing that she was letting Maisie go; but she just has absolutely no natural "cool," and can't pretend to it either. Even the biggest dweebs in rock are cooler than Julianne Moore. I mean... Elvis Costello out-cools her.
If they'd had her be a classical musician or theater actress instead, with everything else being the same, the role would've been perfect for Moore.
"I know! It takes, like, forever to listen to him."
