The most misogynistic thing I have ever seen

Amazing. I'm not saying it is not realistic, but usually this is not shown.

None of the female characters was remotely likable, all were self-absorbed, vapid, petty, messed up, had lots of issues, were emotionally unstable and all just needed a strong male to set them straight.

I wouldn't date any of them. Really.

And I'm saying this as a guy.

Your post is misogynistic, but the movie is not.

adj. 1. misogynistic - hating women in particular.

I could see how someone could say this movie is misogynistic.

Apparently you haven't seen too many movies...nor do you seem to watch the news much if this is the most misogynistic thing you've ever seen/heard.

As far as how "likable" the four female leads are--I thought their 'unlikability' (for lack of a better way to put it) was a large part of what made the movie funny and entertaining. Bitches can be funny too IMHO.

reply

Honestly, and I'm saying this as a fairly stable and sane adult, my friends and I are pretty close to the group in this movie.

And which character was that? Seriously - one of the men was a coward who stood up his pregnant girlfriend at the abortion clinic, another man was the shy awkward guy who was probably a 30-year-old virgin and the last guy was basically a dick, although he did end up boning the girl in the bathroom, not that it set her straight or anything.

That particular character was a misogynist. That does not make it a misogynistic movie...which was, btw, written by a woman!

Most good movies with complex male characters have them be unlikable too, what is your problem lady?!

reply

Misogynistic? Is that why the strip club scenes had all fully clothed STRIPPERS. Zero nudity in multiple strip club scenes? Those male pigs!

The OP sounds like a moron. The film was written and directed by a woman. Geared totally towards women. Depicted rounded women characters who have issues and aren't perfect. Yet this makes it misogynistic. Perhaps the OP should stick to Snow White for a more realistic and less misogynistic portrayal.

reply

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the OP--he seems to be criticizing the movie for offering up men as the 'cure' for these women's messed-up lives.

And how does avoiding nudity in the strip club scenes keep this movie from being misogynistic? Do you think that's the only way in which women can be exploited? A movie can have female nudity and still have a pro-women message; a movie can also be geared towards women and still unintentionally be anti-woman.

Bottom line: Would you be comfortable dating any of them? I'm not saying that it is not realistic, but this level of realism is rarely ever portrayed.

The bride was a poorly acted cartoon character.

It's not mysoginistic to show women as humans. Sorry for not being princesses who bake cookies and make beautiful babies, but we're *beep* up. Life and the *beep* men we've dated have screwed us up.

The movie was written and directed by a woman, so I'm not quite sure where you're getting "misogynist" from. Characters not being DATABLE does not make the film misogynist.

reply

Portraying a small group of women in a less than perfect light (which you yourself concede is not unrealistic) is not misogynistic.

Thinking that dateability is the most important factor (or 'bottom line') in judging a woman is misogynistic.
