Just Curious.... Female Police Officer

I realize this takes place in a tropical location, but would it be normal for a female police officer to wear a tight tank top, short shorts and flip flops while on duty? Her male counterparts are in uniform.... Not judging - it just doesn't seem realistic to me.... I do enjoy the show.. PBS is now showing a marathon, haven't seen it in awhile, but always wondered about that..

Camille and later Florence are detectives, not officers. Florence started out as an officer in season 3 and there she wore the same uniform as her male counterparts. Detectives are in most countries free to wear 'as they please', but there is an unwritten rule that is needs to be more or less ordinary or even business-like. I notice a difference between American and British detectives in Tv series, since American detectives are often shown wearing t-shirts and jeans, while British ones are mostly in suits. I guess it is different from each surroundings, although I don't think there is a written rule about it. Camille and Florence are wearing tight clothes because it is obviously very hot on the island and judging by the wear of many suspects, being less clothed isn't unusual. Besides that, it also might be partially a fanservice, considering how attractive both of them are. Anyway, the whole show, while based in reality, is clearly a fiction. I mean, a small island with 4 cops, but 100 millionaires, one of whom gets killed every third episode... :)

I think it's mostly fan service. For which I say, thanks!

I can see lighter clothes in the heart, even shorts. But she is still a police professional, not an undercover plainclothes cop. I can see more casual, not a uniform like the "beat" cops wear But even so, it would be something more like Bermuda shorts - casual, shorter, but not the hot pants look.

Mind you, Florence has truly dynamite legs, and i like looking. So i don't mind to much. ;) I don't need overwhelming reality in my scripted TV series.

It's not just undercover cops that wear plain clothes, in the UK and the US (and most other nations) detectives also wear plain clothes. Detectives have a very specific purpose as opposed to their beat cop counterparts and so do not need to be recognisable to the general public as civil servants.

i agree. why isn't she dressing more like a professional instead of a tourist. the writers really should change this.

Look at how the extras are dressed. Detectives are supposed to "blend in", and as a lot of the situations involve tourists, she dresses like a tourist. The odd one out was Richard Poole who dressed like he was in London, where as he should have dressed more like Humphrey.

As for British Detectives wear suits, you obviously don't get to see all the police programmes because most wear casual jackets and slacks, like others do in the street.

In Series 1, Episode 1, a female officer wore a uniform. She was a regular policewoman, not a detective like Camille.
