Cancelled

Those brainless monkeys at network seven have just cancelled this entertaining show. That's it, no second season, and no final closure to the characters stories. This is why I hate television!

Good decision, crap show.

Thanks for your support of local product bigdonk. Did you think this was a crap show because you watched every episode, or was it not crappy enough to stop you watching every episode? Either way this was a better program than say, that one joke show Wilfred. Feel free to respond with more than a two word sentence.

reply

Wilfred was brilliant, this show was cringe worthy, turgid, barely literate, ill conceived, derivative rubbish...........good riddance to it. Supporting local crap does nothing for the viability of our industry, in fact *beep* like this makes it harder to get anything made. Notice I resisted the temptation to make play with your name, that would have been too obvious.

Get over yourself, bigtonk. This show was fun, light entertainment. Nothing more. Better than most US shows that take themselves so seriously. I'm sad it was cancelled.

I agree that it was entertaining and was disappointed when I found out it had been cancelled. It wasn't an amazing show but it was interesting to see all the references to early Australian history, plus there being no mobile phones and wireless information networks.

I got tired of the way someone would constantly come along at the last second to save someone being shot though. This happens in most shows with guns and action these days.

It was a good effort overall.

I'm a bit disappointed at the thought of our networks becoming as mercenary as the US and not giving shows much of a chance to get going before they are cancelled.

Was it a jaw-droppingly awesome show? No. It was light entertainment and I too like a show that takes a look back at our early history. I thought it deserved a little longer.

Frankly, I didn't care too much for Jack. And I certainly wasn't interested in Jack, Mary and Mick love triangle. However I loved Captain Gunpowder and even Fuller, and it was for these characters that I watched the show.

I disagree with the comment that it's shows like these that cause our film industry so many problems. This show may have failed to draw huge ratings, but it was a mainstream production that did have some interest. The real killer to our film industry is the fact that too much government funding goes to stupid art house films which never make a profit. Don't get me wrong, I love a good art house film. But our industry has too much self indulgent elitism. Our film industry has to become more mainstream to be able to make it financially viable, and we have to make films that international audiences will buy into.

Well said KaivawKyora. Although as I mentioned 900,000 viewers isn't excactly a small audience and critics have even said if it was on another channel it would have been a ratings winner, but unfortunately seven is to greedy and would prefer to waste money on X-factor shows or worst still, sending Grant Denyer to queensland for a week.

And Captain Gunpowder was my most watchable character too . He could have had his own spinoff show easily.

On a similar point, when is the ABC/BBC going to release BEN HALL on dvd???

reply

Well, for a country with a population as small as ours, 900,000 isn't too bad. I hadn't heard about the critics opinions that it would have done better on a different network, so I don't really know.

But I agree, too much money is thrown on stupid reality shows and the Seven network isn't the only guilty party. One or two, I don't mind. But it's really frustrating when it seems like 90% of the programming is either reality tv or reality based lifestyle shows. And then we finally get an alright show and it gets cancelled. I'm disappointed that Rush has ended as well.

And to be honest, I've never watched enough of Seven's contest shows to know much about Grant Denyer. However I've been watching 'Breaking the Magicians Code', and last week they must have got him to dub over the usual American guy's voice. I quite enjoy the show normally but his voice on that particular show just grated on my nerves. I really hope he won't be voicing any others =/

Ah Captain Gunpowder. How I will miss thee =( Though I'll certainly be watching anything else he gets himself into.

Hmm, I've not heard of the Ben Hall show you mentioned so I'm off to look it up.

Seven is right to cancel this show. In fact, it serves them right for even green lighting it. There is no point in supporting locally made drama or comedy if it's made for ch 7, 9 or 10. 99% of the time it is woeful. I haven't even seen Wild Boys. I've seen the ads. But a show called "Wild Boys"? Are they serious? Why not call it "Bush Dangers"? That at least rhymes, despite being the first name I could think of. And that name still sucks. I can only assume how unoriginal the actual show was.

Here's a tip or 2 for anyone who likes this show. 1- Get Foxtel. If you had more than 5 channels to watch you wouldn't have to watch this because "there wasn't much else on". 2. Get a good internet connection and download anything from HBO, or even Showtime. That is real television. Always original, with a good budget, good acting, good writing, and compelling characters who you look forward to seeing again, not because it's 8.30 on Tuesday night and you're too brain dead to watch a news program on ABC; but because good drama draws you in, makes you relate to the turmoil and conflict that afflicts these characters.

Australian drama on commercial TV just does not do this. At all. That's why I never watch it.

Just watched this for the first time and enjoyed it. Was it really cancelled though or was it just that the story had run it's course? What could be done with a Season 2? Everything was resolved you would just have the two main characters getting into the same hi jinks as they went West.

Sometimes less is more. It would have been a super expensive production too especially for Australian TV. It was good too see hardly any political correctness.

It was cheesy at times but that was fun too, no one seems to be able to shoot straight unless the story calls for it!
