is he or isn't he? (POSSIBLE SPOILERS)

*** PER STANDARD, RESPECTFUL PRACTICE, THIS DISCUSSION COULD CONTAIN MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE YET.

DON'T CONTINUE IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS.

OKAY? Okay.

In the first BLADE RUNNER's theatrical cut, they didn't give us anything to PROVE Deckard was a replicant. They had Gaff drop on origami unicorn, showing that he had been there, but did not kill Rachel. Deckard nods in acceptance of understanding that Gaff cut him a break, THIS TIME. Nothing here proves Deckard is not human. He is human.

Fast forward to newer cuts where they put BACK IN the "unicorn dream/memory" Deckard has at the piano... okay, adding that part in, can prove Gaff knew Deckard's memories, PROVING he was really a replicant.

His status is changeable based on which version you choose to watch. No big deal. He's both - thanks to editing.

In this new version, as far as I can remember having only watched it once, there was only ONE THING that tells us he might be a replicant. JUST one. Where he says, "We were hunted" or something like that..... was he referring to "Replicants being hunted", or just "WE" as in him and Rachel hunted because SHE was a replicant?

I believe, in this movie's universe, there is still no reason to think Deckard IS a replicant. Is that right? Did I miss anything?
Please don't guess or speculate... only use clues from inside the movie universe because that is all that exists for the film.

If you parse it enough, based on what is said and done in BR2049, it could be argued that we don't know for sure. However, based on what is said and done, and what we know about the movie, HE'S A weak Nexus 6 replicant (since all the Nexus 5s kicked his ass) with an open-ended lifespan.

reply

Anything specific that tells you that in the movie? Spoil with specifics... I already post a SPOILER ALERT up top.

Or he's not seen a miracle yet...

I don’t think there was anything. Deckard’s status as a ‘possibly or maybe not’ replicant remains.
When Wallace brings out the fake Rachel (Fakechel?) I think he says something along the lines of ‘You were designed for each other’? This could be taken as a hint at Deckard being a replicant. However, we have no reason to believe anything Wallace says.

reply

Two reasons to conclude our man Deckard is a replikant:

Wallace tells him his original meeting with Racheal was staged by Tyrell, and that Tyrell knew he would fall for her, which means Tyrell had ""tweaked" both of them.

Deckard repeats a comment made by K when Wallace is about to introduce him to the new Rachael: "I know what I feel (felt)". This is conflict: Am I real, or was I produced with implanted memories?

good points. sounds like this film is going with the "he IS" direction -- making the reproduction thing all the more difficult to comprehend.

reply

Don't think he is. Too much evidence points to Deckard not being a replicant.

Kinda how I was feeling, but read BLISSQUEST above. I've only seen it once (no plans to watch again) and don't recall some of that dialog. But kinda points to him being one. I can live with that, if thats where this movie goes. Prefer him as a human, personally.
