Bullying is OK in this movie? *Spoilers?*

So I watched this movie without knowing what I really got myself in to some days ago.
I did see The Lighting Thief and I thought it was okey but nothing more.

But with this move I got some really strange feelings from a 2013 kids movie.
So my 2 main problems was the two female lead actors and their characters:

1. Annabeth was a freaking bully through the whole movie, And she bullied Tyson for his cyclop eye for no reason at all. This really made me dislike this piece of *beep* Annabeth character.

2. Clarisse seemed to be a nice character at the start but early on she acted just like an bully herself and through the movie she really pissed me off with her cocky attitude against Tyson while trying to be pretty. Yes sure some cyclop bashed down her sister? when they were younger but that does not make ALL cyclops to murderers, Tyson did not really look evil at all and he was invited to the camp because he was half brother with Percy so why would she even think that Tyson would be brutal murderer?.

Do these characters also bully humans because they might look different or because they are a part of mankind that kill other humans for no real reason at all, Or is that different?

Yes it might be childish to comment on this but it really gave me the chills that some directors actually think it is ok to let both the nice girl and the not so nice girl, Bully and make people feel bad about themself until these people prove that they can be useful in some way or another.

I have not read the book but whatever stands in some book don't make up for this *beep* being in a movie that clearly was made for an younger audience.

It's not intentional, it's just very bad writing. In real life, the way Clarisse acted for most of the movie would make no sense at all unless she was an insane sociopath. As for Annabeth, I'll pin it on her just being an idiot, a bit like all the characters really.

Also, Cyclops are entirely different species, so "racism" doesn't really come into it. Few people would seriously call you a racist for saying "I dislike insects".

reply

I removed the Racism part because it was unnecesary in my post but anyway,
Yeah the writing was really bad in this movie if Clarisse was meant to be some insane sociopath.
She just looked like a bully from what she did.

It really felt like a bad teen highschool move sometimes where the kids make fun of the new guy just because they are dumb and want to look cool. But this movie had no real school element and that made it feel even dumber.

Sure a fun joke can be made without hurting people to much but this bullying was just getting on my nerves while watching the movie. Yes Tyson did look different and he did move around with his noisy annoying backpack, But it was not necessary to have characters bully the living crap out of Tyson for being a cyclop and acting the way he did.

In the books Annabeth had a very traumatizing experience with a Cyclops at a very young age in which her best friend was killed.
Also, in this world almost all creatures, especially Cyclops, are murderous monsters that hate any and all demigods.
Clarrise, whose dad is Ares, the god of war, is inherently a jerk. She's also supposed to be super ugly, but the writers wanted her to be likeable in the end.
Part of the movie was about accepting people, especially family.

I don't think they're specifically saying "BULLYING IS OKAY, KIDS!" You don't watch a movie with bullying to learn that bullying is okay, but that bullying is a bad thing. I thought it was evident the movie was about acceptance and all that.

1) Annabeth didn't hate Tyson for no reason. It's explained Cyclopes chased them down and "killed" Thalia. Imagine if your best friend got mauled to death by a bear. How would you look at bears afterwards? Annabeth stopped hating Tyson in the end, don't know if you caught that.

2) None of Clarisse's sisters got killed by Cyclopes. I don't recall she had anything against Tyson (if you're referring to when she said, "He's got his father's eyes...sorry, eye," that was mostly to insult Percy, not Tyson). She was just a jerk, being the daughter of Ares, and was mean to everyone.

Are you out of your Vulcan mind?

reply

Wtf? Learn grammar, ok? Or are you staying away from school b/c of bullies?

reply

Like they said, its part backstory: Annabeths childhood trauma caused by cyclops and most of them being murderer beasts, and Clarisse being the daughter of Ares (most of whom, if not all of them, being cocky jerks/jocks). And part bad writing.

I agree with the OP.

I also found it annoying. The Cyclops brother's character was very friendly and almost child-like, just happy to be with a brother. But instead he was just treated like a murdering freak of some kind by the girl for a stupid reason.

reply

In this world, cyclops are looked as slow, stupid, and killers. The campers are making fun of Percy because of the first two. Annabeth's cold treatment is because of the last.

Hating a supernatural species because one of them killed your best friend is not a stupid reason

I usually try not judging people by what their ancestors or people of their same skin color did. So as you can see, I didn't find it nice that a innocent was being treated like *beep* by everyone.

In the world of percy jackson stereotypes tend to be true. ie most cyclops tend to be murderous beings so they pretty much have a good reason to fear and hate a cyclops

'1. Annabeth was a freaking bully through the whole movie, And she bullied Tyson for his cyclop eye for no reason at all. This really made me dislike this piece of *beep* Annabeth character.'

Annabeth had prejudice against Tyson because of the attack that we see at the beginning of the film. It wasn't really done out of spite, as much as it was mental scars and memories of cyclopses and their attack at the gate to the Half-Blood Camp.

'2. Clarisse seemed to be a nice character at the start but early on she acted just like an bully herself and through the movie she really pissed me off with her cocky attitude against Tyson while trying to be pretty. Yes sure some cyclop bashed down her sister? when they were younger but that does not make ALL cyclops to murderers, Tyson did not really look evil at all and he was invited to the camp because he was half brother with Percy so why would she even think that Tyson would be brutal murderer?'

Clarisse wasn't a decent character until the end. She was one of those cocky and confident types that always want to win and loves to belittle people. No, she wasn't correct to bully Tyson, neither was she correct to bully Percy either. This also proves that she does bully humans as well.

Neither of them were correct for their beliefs but Annabeth had more of a reason because she had to see that they weren't all bad and learn to trust one. Clarisse just wanted to bully, because she had some sort of 'I'm the best!' complex.

You are looking at it in black and white, and not reading between the lines. If you did, you would see Annabeth didn't like Tyson for bitterness and prejudice, and not simply as 'well, he's different, I don't like him!'

I think that Annabeth just hated all Cyclops because of what happened to her and her friend when she was younger. It is like if you get attacked by a Pit Bull or lost a loved one because of a pit bull attack you wouldn't want to have any Pit Bulls around. Also reminded me of the Star Trek Character "Captain Kirk", he hated all Klingons just because a few Klingons killed his son.

Clarisse was just arrogant and snobby. She thought she was better than any of them and wanted to make Percy feel bad and didn't care that it could also make Tyson feel bad as well.

I think even Percy has a hard time accepting him until the end, and all of them learn an important life lesson.
