Why wait so long to pass along the money?

It's my understanding, the two-timing father wanted his illegitimate son to get that money, or at least have it used for his benefit. But what if the old man had died ten or twenty years later? That kid and his mom could use that financial help now! Waiting to get them money to them doesn't make sense to me.
