I'm not Indian but here are my 2 cents:
Everywhere, cheap or highly formulaic movies are made for mass audiences and they tend to make big business. In Hollywood you have mindless action or horror movies that bring in a lot of $ but are useless. Well, it seems the average American likes them. In France, we have a lot of silly comedies working well at the BO. It seems the average French likes them...
In India pop corn entertainment for the masses is generally masala (action+humour+romance in a much over the top style) but sometimes it's just action or just comedy. It seems the average Indian likes this
It's the same thing everywhere: pop corn entertainment making big money despite the fact it tends to be stereotyped, cliché etc...
And I said tends to, because not all pop corn entertainment sucks. Some films seem to be dumbing down the audience but not all of them. It's possible to have good mass movies, in Hollywood and in Bollywood.
illogical action scenesÂ
Krrish 3 is sci fi, the characters have powers, obviously there is no realism in that.
Chennai Express is masala with the comedy aspect being the most important, the fights are unrealistic
on purpose, they are part of the comedy.
Dhoom 3 has over the top action scenes because it's an over the top action film. It's not supposed to be realistic.
Ever seen the Die Hard films? NOT realistic, like so many things in occidental films, even just characters punching and punching each other and still having a recognizable face
Simply, as non Indians we're not used to these representations in Indian films but in fact we have our share of unrealism. The difference is Indian films tend to embrace it instead of masquerading it as realistic. It is cinema after all.
Chennai Express, Krrish 3 and Dhoom 3 are not bad films. Krrish is a rather good superhero movie. The other 2 are ok entertainment. I didn't enjoy them much, but they have some good elements. At some point I was bored during CE but the film is adventure packed, it's just that it didn't really appeal to me.
Those films are not great but there is nothing bad about them. Dhoom 3 has various problems: forgettable dialogues, stereotypes, the recurrent Dhoom heroes Jai and Ali are like tourists in their own film - not enough scenes, predictable interactions etc, but it also have some nice parts: the character of Samar, the musical numbers, the end... and it remains entertaining. And I say that despite the fact I wasn't that much entertained. But I see how the film has this entertaining capacity.
We should also remember that mass movies also sometimes flop at the B.O. The remake of Himmatwala got awful reviews and bombed. On the contrary, a movie like Rowdy Rathore got rather positive reviews and worked well... I'm not saying professional critics have something to do with a movie flopping or not, but we do see various cheap movies getting a bad word of mouth... So it seems even the mass audience can make the right choice
