What happened to Bollywood movie audience?

When I was read news that Dhoom 3 is breaking all records, I was curious. So I try to find it on online. Obviously I am not Indian, and in my country we don't know what the hell is Dhoom3 (Usually people who love Bollywood movies are from low-mid class. So its not something cool here, and cinemas don't play it on their theaters ).

I am just curious, I found out recently (in 2013 till date) There are 3 movies that broke box office record in India. Chennai Express, Kkrish 3 and Dhoom3. All of those movies are bad.
When I watched these movies, oh my..in modern days like now, Bollywood still use illogical action scenes (even hilariously bad), cheesy dialogues, overacting actors, etc just like in old times.

So why do people watch Dhoom3 and those other things? I mean where is their taste? Why they let themselves being robbed by irresponsible film makers ? (its irresponsible, because people pay film makers and sometimes worship them, but they just give craps to the people). And why in Bollywood movies, star power is still big thing? I feel they are more focus on star than his/her character.

I am just outsider and non Indian who just curious with their market and movie industry.

Am Indian, and used to love watching Hindi movies. But unfortunately, have to stop and turned to Hollywood movies.I am still amazed at how people idolize these Khans of Bollywood who routinely dished out real garbage, and amassing tons of wealth.OMG.

...and sometimes in America we make expensive crappy movies that lose money. The Lone Ranger comes to mind as a prime example but certainly isn't the only offender.

The problem is that every once in a while crap makes a lot of money. So Hollywood say, let's make crap".

I'm not Indian but here are my 2 cents:

Everywhere, cheap or highly formulaic movies are made for mass audiences and they tend to make big business. In Hollywood you have mindless action or horror movies that bring in a lot of $ but are useless. Well, it seems the average American likes them. In France, we have a lot of silly comedies working well at the BO. It seems the average French likes them...
In India pop corn entertainment for the masses is generally masala (action+humour+romance in a much over the top style) but sometimes it's just action or just comedy. It seems the average Indian likes this

It's the same thing everywhere: pop corn entertainment making big money despite the fact it tends to be stereotyped, cliché etc...
And I said tends to, because not all pop corn entertainment sucks. Some films seem to be dumbing down the audience but not all of them. It's possible to have good mass movies, in Hollywood and in Bollywood.

illogical action scenes

Krrish 3 is sci fi, the characters have powers, obviously there is no realism in that.
Chennai Express is masala with the comedy aspect being the most important, the fights are unrealistic on purpose, they are part of the comedy.
Dhoom 3 has over the top action scenes because it's an over the top action film. It's not supposed to be realistic.

Ever seen the Die Hard films? NOT realistic, like so many things in occidental films, even just characters punching and punching each other and still having a recognizable face
Simply, as non Indians we're not used to these representations in Indian films but in fact we have our share of unrealism. The difference is Indian films tend to embrace it instead of masquerading it as realistic. It is cinema after all.

Chennai Express, Krrish 3 and Dhoom 3 are not bad films. Krrish is a rather good superhero movie. The other 2 are ok entertainment. I didn't enjoy them much, but they have some good elements. At some point I was bored during CE but the film is adventure packed, it's just that it didn't really appeal to me.
Those films are not great but there is nothing bad about them. Dhoom 3 has various problems: forgettable dialogues, stereotypes, the recurrent Dhoom heroes Jai and Ali are like tourists in their own film - not enough scenes, predictable interactions etc, but it also have some nice parts: the character of Samar, the musical numbers, the end... and it remains entertaining. And I say that despite the fact I wasn't that much entertained. But I see how the film has this entertaining capacity.

We should also remember that mass movies also sometimes flop at the B.O. The remake of Himmatwala got awful reviews and bombed. On the contrary, a movie like Rowdy Rathore got rather positive reviews and worked well... I'm not saying professional critics have something to do with a movie flopping or not, but we do see various cheap movies getting a bad word of mouth... So it seems even the mass audience can make the right choice

Enggar13 : were you Indian before you converted to another nationality?

Just curious because you write quite "Indian" style and spell all Indian names properly without a single typo.

I agree on the movie; it is utter garbage. Not sure too why India puts up with this crap.

Well this thing is called 'hype'. Your curiosity is legitimate. The quality of these movies is below average but still they are 100-crore-club movies. The Indian audience simply loves Bollywood and as you might have heard, love is blind. This is just a wave of spicy movies that is dictating Bollywood, this will go away in couple of years and audience will come to their senses believe me.

I will recommend you one really deserving hit - '3 Idiots'. There are many quality movies that just never got their due. Watch those movies and you will understand why people love Bollywood and fall prey to this latest trend of non-sense movies.

Just in case you were wondering, here is a list of some good movies.

3 Idiots (2009) - a typical Bollywood film, but nice one!!
A Wednesday (2008)
Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) - two parts
Life in a Metro (2007)
Dil Chahta Hai (2001)
Like stars on earth (2007)
Kahaani (2012)
Khosla's Nest (2006) - light comedy drama
Chak De! India (2007)
Hera Pheri (2000) - A comedy gem
Black Friday (2004)
Don (2006) - a slow paced but engaging action/thriller!!

Well these are the movies responsible for my everlasting faith in Bollywood, I see a couple of those crap movies just to enjoy how bad they are !! :)

Thank you for making a list of some good Bollywood movies. We started watching Bollywood about a year or so ago and our first one was Queen- would recommend that and PK as well (Queen sucked the whole family into watching it and there's two of us who don't care for watching movies if that says anything about how good it is). Definitely don't judge based on a couple (OP), we've seen some meh ones, some ones we turned off after thirty minutes, and then you find those great ones. I don't find it any different that what we're producing in the US tbh- just need to weed through and find the decent ones. Last movie I liked in the US (born and raised here) was Guardians of the Galaxy.

3 Idiots was a great movie on so many levels. At least give that one a shot.
