Why do they choose to live in the house while it's being renovated?

I understand they're anxious to get into their new home, but the usual time for these renovations are anywhere from four to six weeks. Certainly they can make other arrangements while the work's being done?

I just can't help but feel things would go more smoothly were the homeowner's to not be there, getting under foot, being in the middle of it all?

*Shrug* Maybe it's just me...

If all of their income is tied up in the house being renovated, then where are they supposed to go? Not everyone has friends and/or family who can take them in, and certainly not for an extended period of time. The only option left is to live in the home while it's being renovated. Or, depending on what is being done to the home, there is no reason to vacate the property while it's being renovated.

I recently had MAJOR renovations done to my home (as in, tearing it down to the studs in a couple of rooms). For the majority of the renovations, I and my pets remained in the house. I only vacated and put my pets in a kennel for about five days because of the product being used on the new hardwood floors I had installed. You could NOT remain in the home during the time it took for the floors to cure because of the smell of the product. I spent five days in a hotel as a result. Between that and paying for my pets to stay in the kennel for the same amount of time, it was very expensive, and that was only for five days. I cannot imagine shelling out as much money as would be needed for anything longer than that. So again, it mostly tends to boil down to money. Not many people have the extra funds to shell out on a lengthy hotel stay.

So to me, it's kind of a "duh" question as to why they stay in the house while the renovations are going on. Sorry if that sounds insulting or offensive, but common sense should have given you an idea of why most people stay.

No, this wasn't offensive at all...

but common sense should have given you an idea of why most people stay.

But THIS sure was...

A majority of these people are coming from apartments or someone's basement, so to speak, after several weeks or months of being there, so what's another four to six weeks, in the grand scheme of things. And I understand WHY they stay in the home (See? You're not the only with common sense, in spite of your best efforts to believe this to be true) but they stay in the home, knowing there would be several days the water's turned off (thus, not able to flush the toilet or take a shower), times the electricity is turned off for one or more days, times when the house will be open to the elements due to exterior walls having holes put in them for placement of a window(s) or door(s), yet there they go, moving in, and spending the entire time complaining about it!

I mean, a tent or RV in the backyard is better than what they put themselves through, sometimes, with these renovations!

I call it as I see it. In today's day and age, I'm seeing more and more people with less and less common sense. Whether it's in the form of a question, or the way someone acts on the street, etc.

Very few people have common sense anymore. So I won't apologize for making that comment.

Further, you never stated anything in your original post regarding water or electricity being turned off. Most renovations don't require that for more than a few hours (in my experience, and my friends' and family's experience). Of course if the water or electricity or both are turned off and it's going to be several days as opposed to just a few hours, then the people in the house should make arrangements to stay elsewhere, but again, only for the amount of time the water/electricity will be shut off, not for the full renovation.

I think the problem is that the show has them lie and say they haven't bought the house yet. So they are supposedly staying in their current living spaces until renovations are done (for 4-6 weeks before moving in, after closing). Then they supposedly are just going over there to help or film or whatever.

However, in reality, they already own the house (Mathea slipped up when she said, "What did you do to my house?" and when she said "Our..Your design" to the brothers in regards to the bedroom suite. --Normally when you first buy a home, and haven't been living there yet, you would say the house. But in their case they clearly were living there already.

I think if you are kind, and not an offensive, person you would stay with family and friends for a few days and not a hotel due to expense. Especially if you have already given up your rental (even though the show says they do renovations before you move in).

As long as there's not a potential safety hazard (aka engineering structural issues to be repaired), a homeowner can stay in their house while its being renovated.

But I know what you mean about the complaining. They simply cannot handle being in the space while it's being renovated -- but they stay aanyway ... and COMPLAIN constantly. You want to tell them -- get grip! It's five weeks out of your life. Think of it as an adventure. You will survive.

I think the brothers are being awfully nice since they will be in the way.

Simple: they don't have a friend's or relative's place to stay, and they don't want to waste money on a motel.
