OK flick about some Not-So-Creepy Killer Klowns

Just watched it. It was alright.

A 2023 Netflix Slasher, by way of Spain, where college kids who are also aspiring horror writers get picked off one-by-one by some not-so-creepy Killer Klowns.

Killer Book Club has some good ideas, some cool kills, and at times even conjures up some Wes Craven vibes, however, a lot of it was predictable. The problem is when you've watched a lot of slasher movies, especially ones like Scream, you can start to tell where the beats fall, and for this particular film, some of the foreshadowing was a little too on-the-nose and it kind of gave away the plot.

Spanish actress Veki Velilla, who recently starred in HBO’s Garcia! (2022), does a great job in the role of Angela. Likewise, the remainder of the cast gives good performances as well.

Where the film strikes its visual chords is in its cinematography, which is quite adept at crafting a collegiate gothic aesthetic, a setting where one could believe in both youthful aspirations and a lurking, ominous doom. Each frame is composed with an eye that speaks to the sinister, and this visual storytelling is perhaps where director Carlos Alonso Ojea makes his strongest mark.

To fans of the slasher genre, "Killer Book Club" may serve as a reminder of what drew them to such films in the first place: the pulse of the chase, the chill of the kill, the intrigue of the whodunit, although most will predict all of it before it happens. Regardless, it’s an entertaining movie if you like Slasher flicks and creepy clowns.

I give it a 6.5 out of 10
