Clones for hire. !!Spoilers!!

Clones are being created and it is the Colonel's job to outsource them and fill voids within the workforce in order to downsize and increase efficiency.

There are several doubles shown throughout the film...

The doctor at the hospital is a double of the security guard at Simon's office. The man asking him questions about the attempted suicide at the hospital is a double of the man with the gun from his mother's nursing home. We can also assume that the man who committed suicide early on in the movie was waving to his double.

I recall the scene where James Simon (during the switch) was explaining to Melanie what they do at the office and saying something along the lines of "[we] record people's lives and give faceless people immortality." I also recall the TV commercial explaining vaguely that the Colonel's business is people and how there are no special people, just people.

This leads me to believe that some sort of cloning is taking place and that the clones are used to fill certain demands in the workforce.

Perhaps, every so often, doubles inadvertently (or intentionally) share the same workplace...

Some things to note...

I don't recall seeing any small children in the film. Also, Mia's miscarriage could be related to a greater problem within their society rather than the pills she took. It's also worth noting that there are a lot of suicides, perhaps the birth rate is incredibly low or nonexistent due to the nature of their society or there is a very disproportionate number of men and women.

This would also bring some resolution as to why the Colonel was in the ambulance at the end of the film. Perhaps he wasn't a hallucination, but had been keeping an eye on Simon and James, waiting to see who would come out on top.

Anyway, this is all off the top of my head. It would be a very literal interpretation of things, when I'm not so sure the movie is to be taken as such.

What do you think?

The doctor and guard are the same actor. The man of the questions and the one in the nursing home aren't. Don't think they are clones.

Like someone just said, the only "clones" other than Simon/James are the guard/doctor.

Besides, if they were literally clones, their wounds wouldn't propagate to each other.

Can they really be clones with such opposite personalities?
