Better than Rocky

In my eyes, Rocky is boring, and Sylvester Stallone is not nearly the actor Jake Gylenhall is, to me this movie is 100x better

This movie IS Rocky. So many elements were ripped off from the series:
He switches stance to surprise his opponent in the big fight
He absorbs punishment, doesn't know how to defend until his trainer shows him
He's a former champ reduced to cleaning the gym
He's a white guy fighting a cocky, arrogant person of color
He says he can't win the big fight
Opponent insults his wife, wife dies
Virtually nothing original here. Some pretty good fight scenes and performances though

I thought the same thing.

WAY better than Raging Bull, I hated Raging Bull.

Raging Bull is one of the greatest films ever made. Scorsese's masterpiece. Doing it in black and white made it especially gritty and more powerful. I don't consider it a "boxing picture." It's a character study of a deeply flawed man. Joe Pesci almost stole the acting crown from DeNiro in this film.

Has to be trolling! best not feed trolls they will never go away if you do

That's nonsensical. As much as I love Stallone when he's at his best, even I can admit that he doesn't have the range that Gyllenhaal has. HOWEVER, I don't think Gyllenhaal is capable of making a legendary character like Rocky or Rambo.

Basically, it's like comparing Burt Lancaster with Clark Gable. Like most actors of his generation, Gable hardly ever wavered from his on-screen persona. Hell, critics ate him alive when he tried. BUT, if you watch Burt Lancaster's career, he definitely tried to branch out and push boundaries more. BUT, who do people recognize more today??

If you thought the original Rocky was boring, well then you must have ADD or something similar. Southpaw was drastically boring compared to Rocky I'd say. Practically everything in Southpaw's story was ultra generic, ultra predictable, there was nothing new there at all. In fact to me it seemed like a Rocky sequel darn near. I mean really, the story is nearly the exact same as Rocky 3, but with a touch of I Am Sam in it. The original Rocky is a unique film in multiple ways. It's about 1000x more original than Southpaw.

I would agree that Gyllenhaal is a far better actor than Stallone, however Stallone was a perfect fit for Rocky. That part Stallone can play well. Could he do End of Watch or Donnie Darko or Jarhead as well as Gyllenhaal did? Definitely not, but a boxing role fits Stallone just fine. Since you like Gyllenhaal so much, maybe you should learn to spell his name. You're just a kid aren't you? I bet you'll agree the original Rocky story is far better when you grow up. I'm not saying that you still can't like this film too, but seriously, Southpaw was one of the most standard stories I've seen in a recent film. Watch Rocky 3, it's the same damn story pretty much. Neither Southpaw or Rocky 3 are all that good in my view, but it's hard to dispute that they are very much alike if you watch them both. kirk2121 has it right, almost all of Southpaw was so obviously taken from the Rocky films, in fact the joke about teaching him "Something called defense", was a direct rip-off from the Rocky series, as well as most of the plot itself. Nonetheless, the original Rocky is much better than any of it's sequels and much better than Southpaw as well; At least that's what I contend and it seems most of the public and critics so far would agree.

I just had to see this thread, because seriously, calling Southpaw better than the original Rocky is one of the funniest things I've heard all year.

Hell, Gyllenhaal's character isn't even as sympathetic and endearing as Rocky. This character is fcking dark. He's a mindless brute. Rocky was punch drunk, he may have been a half-assed leg-breaker / collector for 5 seconds, but he was never a psychotic drunk. And this a$$hole wins. Rocky, the far more heroic character didn't even win in the beginning... or the end for that matter.

Great movie, but no way close to Rocky. Rocky is a classic, Rocky is one of the best movies ever made. Southpaw was a great movie, I loved it. But it's like comparing a model ship to the Titanic.

I do nothing to my promoter--not even an azz whooping.

Aside from that huge mound of BS everything in this movie was done in the Rockys decades ago. "The Fighter" is a better movie than this. And this is coming from a guy who's father was a boxer.

all i have to say is LOL. OP must be out of his god damned mind!

I know it sounds sick, but I still wish Stallone gave us this in Rocky 5 than what he did give us. Tommy Gunn ::shudder::

It would fit perfectly with the recent Rocky Balboa.

reply

I'm watching Rocky right now and there is seriously nothing in Southpaw as incredible as when Mickey goes to Rockys apt to tell him that he wants to manage him.

reply

Agreed. It's one of my favorite scenes in all the movies I've seen.

Took you long enough to get here. Took you ten years to get to my house. Huh, what's the matter? You don't like my house? Does my house stink? That's right-it stinks!
