Emotional experience watching this?

Glad I watched this after my visit to South East Asia. Having Visited Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. I get the impression that the country must have been Laos Or Cambodia because they border Vietnam, other than China which we can rule out. I guess they didn't want to name the country for political reasons.
Having been to the Killing Fields and the Prison in Phnom Penh it makes it more of an emotional film for me. Yes it may have starred James Bond himself as British Intelligence but It was a harrowing picture of the possibilities of a Riot/Massacre of Westerners. Not to mention their own people.

Yes some of the stunts where a little implausible like jumping over to the other building from the roof. However you really feel like you are with this family, only slight concern is that no one else seemed to survive. Would have been nice if some locals tagged along and escaped as well.

What are peoples thoughts on the emotional connection. I mean it doesn't beat a film such as The Killing Fields etc but at least Owen Wilson was less annoying than he usually is. It was nice to see him branch out from his usual Vince Vaughn team up comedy.

I agree with your insight. The movie had me captivated for the first 30 minutes of so .... BTW, I don't say that about many movies. Unfortunately, the implausibility began snowballing from that point on with no letting up. Its a shame .... The movie had the potential to be really great.

There's the early scene where Owen Wilson's character is walking through the village shops on his own, completely devoid of westerners, and trying to communicate and he's being stared at by the locals. I experienced this in one of those countries, in fact a couple of places where I stayed in a friend's family hometown it was like they were seeing Tom Cruise walking down the street. I literally almost caused traffic accidents from all the stares and shock from people on their bikes.

So that scene kind of set the tone for me to relate to, and from there it felt quite tense and sickening because I could feel myself there.

*spoiler*

The very end where he tells his daughter to shoot him was so sad. After having recently watched some films with very downbeat endings, I was just about to hit the stop button when his wife appeared and saved the day.
