Was the ending twist needed?

It was okay up until the real Newgate revealed that Jim Sturgess killed two innocent dailies.

Who's to say they were innocent? This is supposed to show how barbaric mental health professionals were back in those days. Now, the fake Newgate will go around to different hospitals posing as a doctor, using methods similar to Silas's, only that work.

actually the doctor said he eluded two orderlies not that he killed them

It's been a long time since I watched this so I can't speak to your specific question.

Nonetheless, I believe everyone is constantly pressuring Hollywood to "wow" us that they complain about movies WITHOUT "twists" now. I remember all the rage about "The Sixth Sense" (which didn't stump me for more than ten minutes but I sat there with my date waiting for it to be "revealed.").

It's kind of sad, really. We're creating an impossible goal and are never happy with a well-written, good story with decent performers and is entertaining. Personally, I think life has enough problems. Some goof or lack of huge twist in a movie is the LEAST of my problems! ;-0

So you heard a word you didn't know the definition of ("eluded") and instead of visiting dictionary.com your first thought was to hop on the IMDB message board and say something stupid? Noted.

No, the ending twist was overkill. The only thing it did for me was explain "Newgate"'s fixation on Eliza (in that he had some sort of disorder. Or not, ha, given the message of the film). Anyway, throughout the movie I kept thinking, this medical professional is only trying to help this woman he met once because she's pretty? He wouldn't have blinked an eye at her professions of sanity if she'd been plain?

I think it wouldn’t take away much from the movie if there was no twist ending. So yes, the twist ending was unnecessary. I was enjoying it a lot as it is. As soon as they burnt half of the asylum down they could’ve ended the movie right there and it would’ve been just fine with me.
