I hope Scream 6 has a unique theme

I've seen every Scream movie and I really enjoyed 1 through 4. I thought 5 wasn't terrible, but it was easily my least favorite. One thing I'm hoping for is that with Scream 6, they explore a different, unique theme.

In 5 they really pushed the theme of fandom, and social media aspects. Maybe it's because I'm not a fan of most of that stuff or Reddit, but it feels like its been done now. We got that exploration in 4 when I think Facebook was taking off, and it felt more fresh in that movie. By the time 5 happened, to me, it felt like they were just retracing that but adding to it with more fanfic stuff.

I get maybe the same can be said for movies 2 and 3 where some of the theme was movie inside a movie, but I'm hoping 6 does something completely different. It probably didn't help that i disliked a lot of the characters in 5 (the main ones weren't bad, but the side characters were not great).

5 is my least favorite too.

For me some issues were leaning too heavily on the original film, outright copying scenes such the opening phone call, the finale in the kitchen of the very same house, also bringing back Billy Loomis as a ghost and having the protagonist be related to him.

Also the new cast (barring Jenna Ortega) was quite poor in my opinion.

6 is doing something different, it's taking place in New York and they're really ramping up the gore and action (or so they say). Also no Sidney Prescott for the first time!

This film will either be a breath of fresh air after the retread that 5 was or it will be an absolute disaster. It's on a knife edge. It has the potential to feel the least 'Scream' like without Sidney, Dewey and Woodsboro. Plus gore and action has never been Screams strength. Not sure the direction they're taking will work.

I forgot they had that ghost of Billy Loomis in 5; yeah that was pretty silly.

I saw the teaser trailer and am excited to see it! Like you said, I'm glad they are trying something different, at least with the location and characters. I wonder how it will play out, kind of reminds me of Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan. I don't really watch Scream for the blood factor (although they had some clever kills in past movies) so I'm curious to see how graphic this one will get.
