My 3yr old girl refuses to believe that Rainbow Dash is a girl!

It's pretty funny how adamant she is about it. She gets mad at me when I try to correct her. She's says "NO DADDY! She's a little boy! She not a girl!" haha
She uses "HE" all the rest of the time.

Out of curiosity, what's the factor for your child's insistence?

The short hair?
Ashleigh Ball's gravel-laced vocal delivery?
The occasional jerkish attitude? (she must be 1/3rd thru Season 2 then.)

"We're fighting for pride, dammit! Ain't no one-legged hobo gonna knock me off my whiskey!"

reply

I don't know why she's so insistent on it. She has seen every single episode and the movie dozens of times each. We all have.

She's too little to explain things very well.

reply

Ask her why Rainbow Dash wears a dress in the movie and in some episodes of the show.

reply

Well, I can sorta relate to your child. When I was young, I thought Merryweather, the blue fairy in Disney's Sleeping Beauty, was a boy. Don't ask me why.

Reminds me of when my world was turned upside-down with the revelation about Swiftheart Rabbit in the Care Bears films.

When I saw the first film, I had assumed Swiftheart was male, but in Care Bears Adventure in Wonderland, the White Rabbit says that Swiftheart is "his niece."

"Thanks, guys." "So long, partner."

Wait, WHAT?!

So, I clicked on this thread thinking that it isn't that hard to realize that Ranibow Dash is a girl, and then I find out that another character who I have grown up thinking was a boy, is not...

I guess it's my own fault for assuming I was "better" at this than others.

You can't go by carebears. They have had like 6 or 7 generations of relaunching and the characters have changed genders, colors, personalities, and back stories. Swiftheart may very well have been a boy in one series and then a girl in another.

Anybody else noticing a pattern here? All of these characters are primarily blue. I do believe color-coding is one of the earliest ways kids try to make sense of the world, and so they tend to very slavishly adhere to the stereotype that blue=boy and pink=girl.

She may not realize it, but I think your daughter is convinced Rainbow Dash is a boy mostly due to the fact that she's mostly blue.

First time I saw an episode, I thought Applejack and Rainbow Dash were guys.

Then I discovered they were all mares, and I was all, "Yeah okay. That makes my boner more acceptable. I can live with that."

No Number is best. 3 builds better than 2. 2 loves better than 1 and 1 mind is better than 3.

reply

Not going to lie it took me a few episodes to realize that Rainbow Dash was a girl too.

I remember I had a female gym teacher in 2nd grade who wore her hair short and I insisted that she was a man. I even referred to her Mr. and sir to her face.

I was 5 when Beat It came out and I initially believed Michael Jackson was a girl. My parents had a good laugh over that one.

Never say "Worst movie ever" to someone who's seen Highlander 2

Have you tried watching "Sleepless in Ponyville" with her:

... and asking why Scootaloo says she wants Dashie to be "like my big sister", not "like my big brother", if she isn't a girl?

I don't think that Rainbow Dash gives a flying feather about what others think about her gender or even preference. She just wants to be admired for her performances.

reply

Rainbow Dash's eyelashes gave her gender away for me. In my knowledge, all female cartoon characters have eyelashes.

It is easy to get that impression too. The voice, look and the mannerisms. Keep thinking the same of Scootaloo too so there you go.

I think it is the voice really though that does it. Which says a-lot about the skill of her voice actress to get that tomboy nature across with the voice.
