What makes Dallas a good person?

In season 2, it seems like characters, especially George and Tessa, would occasionally comment on what a good person Dallas is.

Maybe because I'm watching season 1 now, having missed most of it first time around, and seeing quite a lot of Dallas, I wonder if anyone can shed some light on Dallas' "goodness," because I don't see it.

What I see is a shallow, plastic-looking vapid birdbrain. I'm thinking of her first date with George. When he told her where they were going, she said she didn't want to go eat some meat in a dirty restaurant by the train yard.

I think, compared with her daughter, Dallas is basically harmless, but as I say, I don't see much real good coming out of her either. She represents the worst of suburbia, that's what has been established.

I like the show, a lot, and wish it had been on this fall and am looking forward to its return in a few weeks, but—and I could totally be wrong, I'll admit—it almost seems like lazy writing to have characters remarking what a good person Dallas is rather than have it shown in any meaningful way.

I don't think being shallow and plastic looking makes one bad person - it just makes them shallow and plastic looking. Dallas is not perfect by any means, but she doesn't act in a malicious manner (unlike her daughter, for example) or seek out to hurt people. She usually tries to be helpful in situations, even if her airheadedness (no way that's an actual word, sorry haha!) might get in the way.

In the first episode she actually tries to help Tessa and get a bit closer to her. Later, she tried to help George as well. She's vain but not a bad person.

she's so vain she probably thinks this post is about her!

Because she wanted to use Tessa to get in the sack with George.

She was kind, generous, helpful, there was playful innocence about her, she took a chance on Tessa and gave her a job, she loves her daughter unconditionally.
