So... It's Bruce Alimighty.

Seems like pretty much the same premise. Just saying.

There... see what you did there? That's why you're dumb.

reply

Yes, it reminded me of that as well - except more British. I still want to see it because of the cast.

reply

I agree, I'm going to watch it for the cast as well. I'm not expecting anything great but it should still be entertaining.

reply

Not really... Bruce was given powers by a "god" where here aliens with technology so advanced it might as well be magic "which it probably is lol" gives the guy the power to do anything. Main point being, one is plausible the other one is made up bs. It's pathetic how mankind can even consider gods existence. Guess people never grow up.

reply

if one is true so is the other..

dont you see that?.

if we met and Alien, with the power to do anything.. literally anything..
wouldn't that be god?

It would be A god, not THE God

reply

Why can't "A god" not be "THE God"?
I'm agnostic, but I understand how being bestowed with the power from a god, to complete a purpose, is far more storytelling and poetic than random alien supergizmo.

"somebody used to live here"

reply

it probably be a god in a greek sense (with the flaws and everything) not on a abrahamic sense....

reply

Erm...no-it would be an alien with the power to do anything. It would though, have the powers of a perceived 'God'.

reply

One way of thinking is that aliens were the gods that biblical authors wrote about, in (almost) every religion. There's still the possibility a vast majority of religions are based off a mythology borrowed heavily from previous religions that may or may not still exist to this day.

I don't think anybody here was interested in a debate about the existence of god or your opinion on that topic.

reply

When dumb people think not believing in God is a badge of intelligence, we get braindead comments like yours.

reply

A similar concept... But with more of a sci-fi overtone than a religious one.

It looks alright and I love the cast but I doubt it will be as memorable or successful.

reply

Let's just hope it's not as politically correct and lame as Bruce Almighty.

1. The title is "absolutely anything" but it is probably almost anything. Bruce could not make his estranged girlfriend love him by relying on his godly powers and I suspect the "love me love me" thing will not work either. Despite the title there will probably be SOME limitations and probably MORE limited than Bruce Almighty since not even aliens who are farther ahead of us technologically would be on a par with GOD. Think Q from Star Trek Next Generation or Mxylplk from the Superman comics. Both of them seem like God to us and seem like they can do anything but they would still have some limitations that GOD himself would not have.

2. This kind of story has been done before Bruce Almighty. In the original Twilight Zone a man (I think it was Berges Meredith) was first granted super strength then super intellect from space aliens experimenting on him. He could not quite do "anything" like this movie but its a similar idea. And in STAR TREK NEXT GEN. the above mentioned Q as an experiment granted the "Q powers" to a human to see what he would do with them.

3. I doubt he would be AS POWERFUL as the aliens themselves as they are only giving him "hand me down" secondary powers to him. They would not risk making him as powerful as they are. An example of this is "Charlie X" from the Original Star trek. The aliens that gave him his amazing powers and ultimately recaptured him must have been damned powerful because he himself was afraid of them and his powers were useless against theirs.

reply

Call it what you want--it's still pretty much Bruce Almighty.

I love Simon Pegg, but this premise IS essentially Bruce Almighty. Already calling it: he obviously is initially selfish with his newfound powers, but at some point he realizes the error of his ways, and then uses his powers for the benefit of others. He wins, he gets the girl he never had the courage to ask out, and the Earth is saved.

There, I just saved you $10 and 90 minutes.

Bruce Almighty was a take off of an old Twilight Zone episode, specifically this one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0734593/ as was stated in the post you replied to. In fact this movie more closely follows the original idea than Bruce Almighty did.

reply

Bruce Almighty was based on the book Almighty Me, by Robert Bausch.

reply

This is really annoying. I hate this pathetic attitude, that anything remotely like anything else is apparently a carbon copy.

Many great ideas have been retold in thousands of different forms, in the past this used to be seen as a homage.

I don't get it. Do you really want everything you see to be completely detached from every other idea?

reply

Similar, but not the same. Bruce Almighty also got to do the duties of God. He started to hear prayers, etc. ...

reply

Kind of yes, but it still looks very promising.

reply

Yes but funnier!!

reply

This will be funnier? No chance.

reply

I still prefer Simon compared to Jim, and with a plus of having Terry as a director, there is absolutely a chance for this one to be funnier.

reply

No, it is actually 'The Man Who Could Work Miracles (1936)'. Instead of aliens, the Gods give him the power to make anything he says come true. It looks like a reboot.

reply

This plot has also been used one star trek, when Q gives these powers to Riker.
