Is the happy ending them getting back together or being individuals?

Some people liked them as a couple but also others thought that it was a toxic, alcohol-fueled relationship. What do you guys think? Which ending is happier: she is happy to see him and they get back together, or she is really put off by seeing him and they go their separate ways? It's really up for grabs, but judging from the look on her face I don't think she was very happy to see him.

From what I've read, the general consensus is that the ending is supposed to be open to interpretation. I personally would prefer that she would have moved on from him and wouldn't give in to his rom-com gesture of randomly showing up at her college.

Yeah I don't see it as a happy ending and i think she toldhim to *beep* off at the end because he hurt her and abandoned her.

I love that final shot. It was ambiguous enough so fans of the pairing could walk away thinking they had a chance of working their issues out (a totally plausible scenario, if we go by her previous behavior) but also opened up the possibility Aimee had finally outgrown him.

I'd personally like to believe she finally found herself in college and was ready to move on from Sutter. He only managed to make such an impact on her because she was pretty isolated, stuck in a permanent state of arrested development under her mother's grip. College and true freedom must have opened up a whole new world for her.

They don't say how much time elapsed from when he came clean with his boss (major hint) and to when he showed up at her school. Clearly he had an epiphany and reflection as evidenced by his "essay" and I feel he sobered up and decided to try to make something in Philly with Aimee. She had deep feelings for him and if he was off the sauce and was ready to get serious, I could definitely see it working for them. He smile at the end told me she would at least consider it. People (especially young like him) do grow up and get their act together and he definitely had the catalyst for that. Even in the bar, I think he saw himself becoming that old drunk (and his dad) and came to realize the he COULD get off that path. He had all the tools to become a good man. He showed this numerous times like when he gave Marcus honest and helpful advise about Cassidy, knowing it would only strengthen their relationship and further diminish his chances of winning her back. He also truly wanted to help his friend Ricky without any selfish motivation and he genuinely liked people which was what set him apart from his father. The character arc was pretty clear to me.
