what this movie is based off of

this movie is based off of the parasite Cymothoa, and to honest, thats *beep* terrifying. what that parasite does is attaches to the tounge and drinks out all of the blood from it, then, after its gone it replaces the tounge. what it looks like they did in this movie was made it bigger and more typical as it goes inside you and eats your organs. to me having a giant creature for a tounge is scary as *beep* and leads me to believe their may be zombies in the film. honestly ive never understood why paranormal activity is scary, i have yet to see the unseen horror tactic work perfectly, but this one looks scary as *beep* and i will be seeing it.
but on another note, people hate on movies that are found footage but they have been doing this *beep* FOREVER so just let it take course until they finally make a collection of found footage movies and it goes away. then, of course, youll wine about the new horror fad or remakes. which also have been around forever and i think that they should remake horror movies but stick to bad ones, im rambling now and i shall take my leave.

yeah they attach to fish tongues, consume them, replace them and just sit there for the rest of the fishes life, draining blood and actually operating as its tongue. Apparently the fish don't even realise they have a creepy, scaly bug where their tongue used to be. It's disgusting. Also, this movie is pretty good, but the lead actress, the reporter, is terrible- everyone else were pretty proficient. The film was genuinely intriguing and creepy, aside from one really unnecessary jump scare near the end. Its a little anticlimactic- just like real life- which is probably what makes this so unnerving.

The jump scare near the end led to one of the most disturbing bits in the flick. Did you see where the parasites were headed? Notice that the reporter couldn't get in contact with the mother?

reply

the reporter "did" get in contact with the woman, but she wanted no part int he documentary. The scene where the bug is crawling (to which you refer) looks as though it may have gone into the baby stroller - but I don't think that is what happened. Actually, it looked as though once the bugs exited the body the crawled off somewhere else, not interested in going back into someone else. It wasn't an organism looking to attack, it just had a sped up lifecycle and did what it normally does to fish.

So where was it going to go?

watch PA in a dark room with headphones, then its scary!!! :D

This film would have been better left as a cautionary tale, rather then a horror movie. The parasite is the movie, is not dangerous to humans, it is called fish flies, and it really only is damaging to soft tissue organizims.

reply

well yes, in real life they cant, but whats scary is saying "what if they could?" its what horror movies do! its not like a great white is going to turn into a serial killer, but it did turn into a classic. this will be a good way to spend the night but probably not a classic.

And a lizard can never get as big as Godzilla, a gorilla as big as kong, a blonde as big as the 50 ft woman, a fish thingee as big as the creature from the host, etc. the story wont be realistic, it's how it's told that can be fun.

Fact: 87.3% of IMDB users belong to the secret society of cynics.

Kind of reminds me of the Korean movie "Deranged"..

Cymothoa exigua females indeed makes the tongue atrophy. However, you forgot to mention that it only attaches to fish, and is totally harmless to humans.

It is also impossible for the cymothoa to survive in a human mouth, and even if it could, it wouldn't be able to replace the human tongue.

"Females are 8–29 millimetres (0.3–1.1 in) long and 4–14 mm (0.16–0.55 in) in maximum width."

"The average length of the human tongue from the oropharynx to the tip is 10 cm (4 in)."

(Quotes from Wikipedia)

When it comes to "giant size" - should it be big enough to replace a human tongue its weight would be at least a few hundred grams, and the human tounge has an averege weight between 60 and 70 grams.

Two times the size = four times the area = eight times the volume.

Imagine the weight of the exoskeleton keeping that monster together!

if you pay attention to the preview though they say something about steroids in the water....that makes me think they are going from an angle that the steroids mutated the parasite idk excited for the movie...i hope that is the case however because that then makes it a more realistic scenario..there have been multiple instances where our government has tried to pass bills allowing them to put floride and antidepressants in the water..so you never know!!!!

Although it is true that this parasite only attacks fish and it is therefore not harmful to humans, it is nevertheless gross as *beep* when you find one on your dinner plate. We bought fresh fish that were bred on the island we were staying on holidays and this bug fell out of the fish's mouth when I removed the bones. That crustacean is spreading like wildfire and I can guarantee that its appearance in the UK is NOT an isolated incident (as Wikipedia claims) and it can be found in the Mediterranean Sea as well.

I still shiver when someone mentions that tongue-eating parasite so I don't need to watch the movie to get scared ... reality is enough for me.

The picture in the movie poster is of a Bathynomus Gigantus, which is a giant Isopod that lives on the bottom of the ocean and scavenges food. Otherwise the description of the tongue eating fish parasite is relatively accurate. There are pictures all over google.
